Our After-School Program provides children ages 5-10 with a safe and welcoming environment where they can participate in recreation, sports, creative arts, literacy, homework support, leadership development, and healthy living activities.

We are seeking enthusiastic, dependable, energetic, and caring individuals to join our team as Relief Children's Program Mentors for the 2026-2027 school year.

Position Summary

The Relief Children's Program Mentor provides on-call coverage across multiple BGC Jane and Finch Club after-school program locations to ensure quality programming continues during planned and unplanned staff absences. Working under the direction of the Site Lead and Children's Program Coordinator, Relief Mentors assist with delivering engaging programming while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.

This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy variety, are flexible, and can confidently adapt to different program sites, age groups, and daily routines.

Please Note: Relief staff are expected to travel between program locations and may be assigned to different sites based on operational needs and daily staffing requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Program Planning & Delivery

• Assist in planning and facilitating engaging daily after-school programming.
• Deliver age-appropriate recreation, sports, literacy, homework support, creative arts, STEM, and healthy living activities.
• Step into existing program plans and ensure smooth program delivery.
• Promote teamwork, inclusion, leadership, and positive youth development.
• Build positive relationships with children through active participation and mentorship.

Child Supervision & Safety

• Provide active supervision of children at all times.
• Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios.
• Promote positive behavior using encouragement, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
• Ensure all children are signed in and out according to program procedures.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies, injuries, illnesses, and behavioural incidents.
• Follow all BGC Jane and Finch Club policies, Ontario health and safety regulations, child protection procedures, and food safety standards.

Program Operations

• Assist with daily program set-up and clean-up.
• Prepare activity spaces before participants arrive.
• Assist with snack preparation and distribution following food handling procedures.
• Maintain attendance records and complete required documentation when assigned.
• Ensure program spaces remain clean, organized, and welcoming.

Teamwork

• Work collaboratively with Site Leads, Program Coordinators, volunteers, placement students, and fellow staff.
• Quickly adapt to different program sites and staff teams.
• Attend mandatory staff meetings, orientations, and professional development sessions.
• Support PA Day programs, school break programming, community events, and special events.

Communication

• Maintain professional relationships with children, families, school staff, and colleagues.
• Report concerns, injuries, behavioral incidents, and parent inquiries to supervisors promptly.
• Represent BGC Jane and Finch Club professionally within the community.

Qualifications

Required

• Currently enrolled in or graduated from:
  • Early Childhood Education (ECE)
  • Child & Youth Care (CYC)
  • Child & Youth Worker (CYW)
  • Social Service Worker (SSW)
  • Recreation & Leisure
  • Education
  • or a related field.
• Experience working with children ages 5-10.
• Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
• Ability to adapt quickly to different program environments.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

Applicants must possess or obtain prior to employment:

• Standard First Aid & CPR-C Certification
• HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification
• Valid Food Handler Certificate
• Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in after-school programs, camps, recreation, or community programming.
• Experience supporting children with diverse learning, behavioral, or developmental needs.
• Knowledge of the Ontario After School Program Guidelines.

Availability

Applicants must be available to work a minimum of three (3) weekdays per week between 2:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Relief staff must be flexible and available to accept shifts at multiple program locations, sometimes on short notice, to cover staff absences and operational needs.

Contract Term

Start Date: August 24, 2026

Initial Contract:
August 24, 2026 - December 18, 2026

Employment may be renewed for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year based on program funding, organizational needs, and satisfactory job performance.
