School Overview

St. John’s School (SJS) is a leading independent, all-gender IB World School in Vancouver, Canada, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP) across Kindergarten to Grade 12. Position Purpose & Overview

St. John’s School (SJS) is seeking a qualified and experienced After School Care Provider. The After School Care Provider will assist with the caring of children in grades K - 7. They will engage with small to large groups of children in a supportive manner and guarantee a safe environment, following relevant legislation, procedures, and school policies.


Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities and expectations of the After School Care Provider include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensures the After School Care Program complies with relevant legislation, procedures, and requirements, including hygiene, health and safety, and safeguarding regulations.
  • Manages the planning and delivery of age-appropriate play opportunities, ensuring they are carried out in a safe and caring environment for children.
  • Maintain our timeline for collecting and transporting students from classrooms to after school care spaces.
  • Maintains a positive and collaborative relationship with our teachers.
  • Maintains accurate records and reporting related to enrolment, behaviour, and incidents.
  • Monitors how resources are utilized to ensure the After School Care Program is running in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Undertakes such duties as may become necessary to ensure the successful running of the program.
  • Direct interaction with students one-on-one.
  • Actively engages with small or large groups of children in an interactive and supportive manner.
  • Utilizes our resources (activities and games to actively engage our students).
  • Work collaboratively and positively as a full after school care team.
  • Reports to the Lead Role - After School Care Provider, and Junior School Principal.


This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often during early mornings before the school has opened; occasionally going onsite to facilitate and speak with appropriate staff; and occasional evening and weekend commitments.

It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the direct supervisor and the employee, in order to effectively meet the requirements of the School. On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.



Required Qualifications & Key Competencies

Education & Experience

  • A Basic First Aid certificate.
  • Relevant post-secondary education such as Recreation, Childcare, or other relevant educational credentials.
  • Completion of the Responsible Adult Certification (20 hours online course).
  • 3+ years of related experience in child care and/or programs in development and delivery.
  • Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Experience managing a variety of children’s behaviours.

  • Excellent client services and interpersonal skills.
  • Abilities to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgement, and work as a positive and collaborative team member.
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter and the ability to work independently.
  • Organized with the ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands.



Conditions of Employment

  • The candidate must have a valid Responsible Adult Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
  • The candidate must submit proof of vaccination against tuberculosis.
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-aid training provided by St. John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for the vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record checks for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • The ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.
