Job Description


The Elementary PE Teacher is responsible for advancing their students’ physical ability and knowledge of sports. They are responsible for the welfare of their students and for ensuring that students can gain the qualifications they need to advance their education or their desired career paths after school.


Key Responsibilities


  • Supervising practical PE lessons, including both indoor and outdoor classes
  • Ensuring that children compete to their ability level and aren’t exposed to unnecessary injury or illness through school sports
  • Motivating school children to take up new sports or athletic pursuits
  • Evaluating the performance of students throughout the school year
  • Attending parents’ evenings and providing parents with comprehensive reports on their child’s progress
  • Training and coaching school sports teams to compete and succeed in nation-wide events
  • Transporting individual competitors, school teams and other teachers to and from school sporting events
  • Social-Emotional Learning: Foster teamwork, cooperation, fair play, and self-discipline among young learners.
  • Student Health & Wellness: Maximize student time in Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) to promote cardiovascular health.
  • Safety & Environment: Implement safety procedures, ensure proper use of equipment, and maintain a highly structured, inclusive learning space.
  • Curriculum & Instruction: Develop standards-aligned lesson plans that emphasize fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing), basic game rules, and rhythmic activities.
  • Physical Demands: High stamina is required to stand, walk, demonstrate exercises, lift heavy sporting equipment, and occasionally assist students.


Qualifications


  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field is typically required
  • Licensure: A valid state teaching license with the appropriate K-12 or elementary physical education endorsement. (In Arkansas, this requires adhering to Arkansas Department of Education standards)
  • Certifications: Current certifications in CPR and First Aid are almost always required.
