Job description

AFTER-SCHOOL Staff Members
2026 - 2027
University School of Nashville is seeking After School staff members for the 2026-2027 school year. After School staff members are responsible for managing a cohort of students, initiating activities with children that encourage prosocial behavior and build community awareness, and facilitating a social curriculum that will help the children become successful adults. In addition, they are responsible for keeping the environment clean and safe and leading and monitoring outside play in varying weather conditions. After School staff members work with their teammates using appropriate guidance and conflict resolution techniques, communicate with each other about issues that may arise, and provide constant attention to the needs of the children in their care.
USN has a deep commitment to equitable and just community spaces. Candidates should have an awareness of the ways in which implicit biases in race, ethnicity, gender identity and socioeconomic class can shape social interactions and community culture. Candidates should be able to translate that awareness into demonstrable actions that promote equitable and just programming.
Qualifications:
  • Must be energetic, creative, caring, and motivated
  • High school diploma is required, some college is preferred
  • Previous experience working with school-aged children is required
  • Must be able to move easily inside and outside in order to fully engage in activities with students and to provide adequate supervision in our facility
  • Candidates with classroom experience, or those seeking a career in education are given preference
  • Must be available to work from August 10, 2026 to May 27, 2027

Hours:
  • 15-20 hours per week
  • Applicants with Monday through Friday availability are given preference
  • Shifts available: 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
  • Must be available on Fridays at 2:00 pm for required weekly meetings
  • A few days will require greater flexibility in hours, including morning hours

Starting Pay:
  • $18/hr
  • Additional experience in the care of school-age children will be considered

Please note: There are opportunities to combine the After School staff position with the Lower School Teaching Assistant position for a 30+ hours/week benefits eligible position. If you are interested in being considered for this combination, please apply for both positions and let us know.
In order to complete the online application process, please be prepared to upload your resume and cover letter.
Mission Statement
University School of Nashville models the best educational practices. In an environment that represents the cultural and ethnic composition of greater Nashville, USN fosters each student's intellectual, artistic, and athletic potential, valuing and inspiring integrity, creative expression, a love of learning, and the pursuit of excellence.
University School of Nashville is a K-12 coeducational day school with enrollment of 1,088 students. The Main Campus is adjacent to Vanderbilt University at 2000 Edgehill Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee. USN encourages a diverse applicant pool and provides equal employment opportunities for employees and job applicants.
The School
University School of Nashville is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school with enrollment of over 1,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. In 1915, the George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School, USN's predecessor, which earned acclaim for its curriculum and faculty. In 1974, Peabody College announced plans to close PDS, and a group of parents, alumni, students, and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville.
USN's midtown location adjacent to Vanderbilt University and its Peabody College for Teachers reminds us each day of our beginnings over 108 years ago in the demonstration school culture of innovation and educational best practices. It's a vibrant educational community for both students and teachers in the midst of a dynamic city.
In the USN community, students expect much of each other, and faculty benefit from that high standard. We seek educators who are enthusiastic about their own learning to complement their work and we offer many opportunities for professional growth. USN is committed to creating an institutional environment that mirrors the cultural and ethnic composition of greater Nashville. USN encourages a diverse applicant pool and provides equal employment opportunities for employees and job applicants.
