What is an aft?

Aft jobs typically refer to positions related to the rear section of a ship, aircraft, or other vehicles. In maritime and aviation contexts, 'aft' denotes the back or tail end, so Aft jobs might involve maintenance, operations, or safety tasks in those areas. For example, on a cruise ship, aft positions could include roles in engineering, housekeeping, or entertainment located toward the rear of the vessel. The specific duties vary depending on the industry and type of vehicle or craft involved. These roles are essential for ensuring the smooth functioning and safety of the entire operation.

What are some typical challenges faced by aft engineers working on marine vessels, and how can they be addressed?

Aft engineers on marine vessels often deal with unique challenges such as maintaining propulsion systems, managing tight spaces, and ensuring the safety and functionality of critical machinery located at the rear of the ship. These challenges require strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure, especially during unexpected mechanical issues or rough sea conditions. Regular preventive maintenance, clear communication with the rest of the engineering team, and staying updated on the latest maritime technology are effective ways to address these challenges and ensure smooth vessel operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aircraft maintenance technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician, you need a solid understanding of aviation mechanics, troubleshooting, and repair procedures, typically supported by an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification or equivalent. Familiarity with maintenance management systems, diagnostic tools, and technical manuals is essential for efficient and compliant work. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help technicians excel in safety-critical environments. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure aircraft safety, regulatory compliance, and operational reliability.

Understanding these distinctions helps job seekers find the most relevant opportunities in aviation maintenance.

Job description

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) powers the physical engine at the heart of Amazon. AFT builds and operates software, hardware, and the processes that run the global network of fulfillment centers that move billions of units of inventory, employ tens of thousands of people, and ensure that customers get what they want when promised. We do this by building automated solutions to handle things that technology does well, while relying on people to handle things that humans do well. We use innovative technologies to simplify the process by taking advantage of materials handling automation, mathematical optimization, computer vision, robotics, and machine learning. Our highly scalable distributed systems are designed to handle billions of transactions a year.
The AFT Fulfillment Science team is seeking an innovative, intellectually curious, results-oriented technology leader who will be responsible for driving our product roadmap and aligning cross-functionally both in terms of guiding the design/development within our group and getting the work prioritized across multiple teams/stakeholders. In this role as Senior Technical Program Manager (TPM), you will work closely with Sr. Leaders, stakeholders, scientists, software engineers, and product teams across AFT to deliver on highly complex, ambiguous business problems that require cross-org (e.g. Robotics, Operations, Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT), Transportation Management, etc) innovations and project delivery activities. This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done. This role provides clear, comprehensive and timely status updates, including decisions made, tradeoffs and any escalations needed to remove obstacles to all stakeholders. You will need strong judgment. Our leaders have a lot of ownership and autonomy so they need to be right a lot. Finally, you'll need to be able to invent and simplify which is what we do every day on AFT teams.
