What is an AFSIM job?

An AFSIM job typically involves working with the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM), a government-developed tool used for simulating military operations and systems. Professionals in this field create, analyze, and optimize combat simulations to support decision-making and strategy development. They often have backgrounds in engineering, computer science, or operations research and work for defense contractors, government agencies, or military organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Afsim position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AFSim (Advanced Framework for Simulation Integration and Modeling) Analyst, you need a solid background in modeling and simulation, systems engineering, and experience with military or defense simulation environments. Familiarity with the AFSim platform, scripting languages such as Lua or Python, and relevant security clearances are typically required. Strong analytical skills, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and interpret complex data. These skills ensure you can create accurate, meaningful simulations that support decision-making and mission planning in defense contexts.

What are some typical projects or tasks that an AFSim Analyst might work on within a defense organization?

AFSim Analysts are often tasked with developing and running advanced simulations to model military scenarios, assess system performance, and evaluate the impact of new technologies or tactics. They may work on projects ranging from air combat modeling to integrated mission simulations, collaborating closely with engineers, scientists, and military planners. Daily responsibilities usually involve scenario scripting, data analysis, model development, and presenting findings to stakeholders. This role frequently requires adapting simulations to evolving mission needs, making it both dynamic and integral to strategic decision-making.

Position Overview

The Amatriot Group is seeking a Senior AFSIM Engineer to support Modeling and Simulation efforts for a U.S. Navy program. This role is focused on developing, customizing, and leading AFSIM-based solutions in support of Electronic Warfare and Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations.

This is not a user-level role; the ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader, driving the development of advanced simulation architectures, custom models, and mission-level analysis capabilities. The position requires strong engineering judgment, hands-on AFSIM development expertise, and the ability to lead small teams and interface directly with government stakeholders.

Key ResponsibilitiesAFSIM Development and Simulation Architecture
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of custom AFSIM solutions to support mission analysis and system evaluation.
  • Develop and extend custom models, behaviors, and plugins within AFSIM to meet evolving mission requirements.
  • Architect and execute complex simulation scenarios supporting Electronic Warfare, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations, and multi-domain operations.
  • Integrate AFSIM with other modeling and analysis tools, such as STK, NGTS, Builder, or other mission-level frameworks.
Technical Leadership and Stakeholder Support
  • Serve as a technical lead for AFSIM-based efforts, providing guidance to junior engineers and analysts.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align modeling efforts with system requirements and operational objectives.
  • Analyze simulation outputs and provide actionable insights, technical reports, and briefings to government stakeholders.
  • Communicate with government stakeholders in support of technical and mission objectives.
Programming, Automation, and Systems Engineering
  • Apply programming expertise, including Python, C++, or similar languages, to support automation, data processing, and tool integration.
  • Support model-based systems engineering activities where applicable.

Qualifications:Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in modeling and simulation, with direct AFSIM development experience.
  • Proven ability to develop and customize AFSIM models, not only execute simulations.
  • Experience serving in a team lead or technical leadership capacity.
  • Experience supporting DoD programs, ideally within Electronic Warfare, Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations, or intelligence domains.
Skills
  • Strong programming skills, such as C++, Python, or similar languages.
  • Strong engineering judgment and hands-on AFSIM development expertise.
  • Ability to lead small teams and interface directly with government stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on-site in Crane, Indiana and collaborate in a classified environment.
Certifications
  • Must be willing to obtain Security+ certification within 60 days of start.
Clearance
  • Minimum TS clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Deep familiarity with AFSIM architecture, scripting, and plugin development.
  • Experience integrating AFSIM with mission-level or constructive simulation environments.
  • Knowledge of electronic warfare, RF systems, or spectrum operations.
  • Experience with MBSE tools such as SysML, Cameo, or MagicDraw.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
