Job description

A top-ranked national affordable housing lender is seeking an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter to join its underwriting Team. Fannie MAH, Freddie TAH, bridge loans, and a range of complex affordable transactions including LIHTC, tax-exempt bonds, RAD, Section 8, and mark-to-market deals.
Senior Underwriters own deals end-to-end - from application through close and delivery - working directly with institutional borrowers and a highly collaborative structuring and production team. The group is a tight-knit, tenured team known for mentorship, high ethical standards, and a culture of promoting from within.

Core Responsibilities
Underwrite Complex Transactions
  • Execute all aspects of the underwriting process
  • Prepare high-quality credit narratives demonstrating clear understanding of deal dynamics and risk
  • Evaluate sponsor motivations, track record, and business plan; borrower structures and obligations; key principal financials; collateral history; and alignment between underwritten NCF and market reality
Risk Identification and Mitigation
  • Evaluate complex borrower structures and articulate risk trade-offs
  • Identify credit, structural, or documentation issues early and present solutions
Model Ownership and Accuracy
  • Ensure model accuracy and compliance with Agency and internal guidelines
  • Establish NCF assumptions with supportable rationale
Final Package Review
  • Serve as final reviewer of narrative, model, and closing documents
  • Ensure full compliance with Agency policies and timely delivery
Deal Management
  • Lead deal team calls, managing timelines and borrower/producer expectations
  • Proactively communicate deal status with full transparency
  • Anticipate and solve problems creatively
Platform Leadership
  • Mentor and develop analysts, senior analysts, and processors
  • Identify inefficiencies and champion operational improvements
  • Remain current with Agency guidelines, policy updates, and credit trends
Ideal Candidate
  • Meaningful experience underwriting Fannie Mae and/or Freddie Mac affordable housing transactions
  • Strong command of LIHTC, tax-exempt bond, RAD, Section 8, and/or mark-to-market deal structures
  • Demonstrated ability to own complex transactions independently
  • Excellent written and analytical skills; strong credit judgment
  • Collaborative team player with a track record of mentorship and platform contribution
