Duties The United States Space Force (USSF) at Peterson SFB Colorado Springs CO is searching for an Offensive and Defensive Space Control (ODSC) Astronautical Engineer (NH-0861-03, GS-12/13 Equivalent). Description: We are seeking a leading Aerospace Engineer / Orbital Analyst to drive critical Offensive and Defensive Space Control (ODSC) operations. If you are a visionary problem-solver passionate about Space Domain Awareness (SDA) and tackling highly complex orbital challenges, this is your next mission.Serves as command headquarters level Offensive and Defensive Space Control (ODSC) Astronautical Engineer, a technical authority in applying aerospace engineering techniques to the ODSC mission area, particularly the space surveillance and orbital analysis functions, including evaluation of operational activities and numerical validation of space control algorithms.Candidate should have a strong background in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and/or computer science with at least four years of R&D experience in advanced astrodynamics, space surveillance, and the related fields is highly desirable. Advanced degree(s) and studies in the relevant fields are preferable. A professional engineering degree at the bachelor's level from an ABET accredited institution in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field is required.Key Responsibilities:- Mission-Critical Analysis: Spearhead space surveillance and capability development, applying advanced orbital mechanics (satellite propagation, conjunction assessment, and maneuver support).- Algorithm Validation: Lead the numerical validation of crucial space control algorithms to ensure operational readiness and program success.- Strategic Advisory: Serve as the definitive SDA consultant to DoD and interagency partners, advising top-level leadership on feasibility and long-range objectives.- Mentorship & Collaboration: Guide major project phases, mentor emerging engineering talent, and represent our organization across industry and government symposia.Background: Professional knowledge of standard accepted aerospace engineering practices to be able to perform orbital analysis on Earth orbiting objects. Comprehensive knowledge of broad areas of classical and modern higher mathematics in order to originate and develop improved and/or new mathematical models in astrodynamics. Detailed knowledge of operational and prototype astrodynamics and space related theories, modeling, simulation, and computer software systems to identify operational system weaknesses and vulnerabilities and to assure current and future mission requirements are met. Broad knowledge of USSPACECOM, USSF HQ CFC, MD 2, CSPOC and NSDC procedures and policies. Skill to negotiate and/or defend findings and program support concepts. Ability to lead study teams; originate new ideas, projects, and methodologies; and execute projects and/or studies within established financial and/or time constraints. Ability to develop and utilize appropriate data collection techniques and design, build, and use models and simulation techniques. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; negotiate complex issues; and maintain good working relationships. Maintain good team building skills and working relations with superiors, peers, and subordinates. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures.
