How much do aeronautical engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for aeronautical engineering in the United States is $62.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $42.79 and $82.69 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Aeronautical Engineering vs Aerospace Engineering?

AspectAeronautical EngineeringAerospace Engineering
FocusDesign, development, and testing of aircraft within Earth's atmosphereDesign, development, and testing of aircraft and spacecraft, including outer space
Work EnvironmentAirports, aircraft manufacturing plants, research labsSpace agencies, aerospace companies, research facilities
CredentialsBachelor's in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, certifications in aviationBachelor's in Aerospace Engineering, advanced degrees often preferred

While both fields involve aircraft design and share similar educational backgrounds, aeronautical engineering primarily focuses on aircraft operating within Earth's atmosphere, whereas aerospace engineering encompasses both atmospheric and space vehicles. The choice depends on whether you're interested in airplanes or spacecraft development.

What is aeronautical engineering?

Aeronautical engineering is a branch of engineering focused on the design, development, testing, and production of aircraft that operate within Earth's atmosphere. It covers areas such as aerodynamics, avionics, propulsion, and aircraft structures. Aeronautical engineers work on both civil and military aircraft, ensuring their safety, efficiency, and performance. This field requires strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of physics and mathematics. Careers in aeronautical engineering are available in industries like aerospace manufacturing, defense, and government research.

What engineers make $500,000 a year?

In aeronautical engineering, very few professionals earn $500,000 or more annually. Typically, high salaries in engineering are achieved through executive roles, senior management, or specialized consulting positions, often requiring extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aeronautical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aeronautical Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in aeronautical or aerospace engineering. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, simulation tools like MATLAB, and knowledge of industry standards are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help set candidates apart in this field. These skills are crucial for designing safe, efficient aircraft and ensuring successful collaboration on complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by aeronautical engineers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Aeronautical engineers often collaborate with professionals from various fields, such as materials science, electronics, and software engineering, to design and develop aircraft systems. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as technical jargon and priorities can differ. Additionally, balancing competing requirements like weight, performance, and safety standards requires strong teamwork and problem-solving skills. Adapting to rapidly evolving technology and regulatory changes also demands continuous learning and flexibility within the team environment.
