What does an aerodynamic design engineer do?

An Aerodynamic Design Engineer is responsible for analyzing, designing, and optimizing the shape and features of vehicles, aircraft, or other objects to improve their aerodynamic performance. They use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and wind tunnel testing to reduce drag, increase efficiency, and ensure stability during motion. Their work is crucial in industries like aerospace, automotive, and motorsports, where minimizing air resistance and maximizing speed or fuel economy is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aerodynamic design engineer?

To thrive as an Aerodynamic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in fluid dynamics, mechanical or aerospace engineering, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, wind tunnel testing, and CAD tools is essential, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills that help address complex design challenges. Mastery of these skills ensures the creation of efficient, safe, and innovative aerodynamic solutions vital to competitive product development in aerospace and automotive industries.

What are some common challenges faced by aerodynamic design engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Aerodynamic Design Engineers frequently collaborate with teams such as structural engineers, manufacturing, and testing crews, which can pose challenges in aligning priorities and balancing design trade-offs. For example, an optimal aerodynamic shape might conflict with manufacturability or structural integrity requirements. Effective communication, flexibility, and a strong understanding of interdisciplinary constraints are key to finding solutions that satisfy all stakeholders. Being proactive in early-stage discussions and using simulation tools to present data-driven options can help mitigate potential conflicts and streamline the design process.

What is the difference between Aerodynamic Design Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAerodynamic Design EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Aeronautical EngineeringBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesigning airflow for aircraft, vehicles, or turbinesDesigning mechanical systems across various industries
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, sports equipmentManufacturing, automotive, energy, robotics
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

While both roles require strong engineering fundamentals and similar credentials, Aerodynamic Design Engineers focus specifically on airflow and fluid dynamics in aerospace and automotive contexts. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on mechanical systems across multiple industries. The key difference lies in specialization: aerodynamic design versus general mechanical systems.

Job description

KRUSH Tech is a new technology company building advanced hardware solutions for defense, aerospace, communications, and autonomous systems. We're launching our U.S. operations from the ground up — and this is a rare opportunity to join at the very beginning and help shape the company from day one.

At KRUSH Tech, we combine the agility of a startup with the ambition to tackle some of the industry's most demanding engineering challenges. Our teams work across disciplines—including RF, embedded systems, electronics, mechanical engineering, software, manufacturing, and supply chain—to transform innovative ideas into reliable, production-ready solutions. We are building a next-generation, vertically integrated aerospace organization focused on advanced uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), autonomy, sensing technologies, and scalable manufacturing — for the U.S. market and strategic partners.

As a Senior Aerodynamics Engineer, you will lead the aerodynamic design, analysis, and optimization of advanced UAV platforms from concept development through flight validation. You will be responsible for predicting and improving aircraft performance using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), analytical methods, and experimental data while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

This role combines deep technical expertise with hands-on engineering and requires a strong understanding of aerodynamics, aircraft performance, simulation methods, and multiphysics analysis. You will play a key role in shaping vehicle performance, stability, efficiency, and manufacturability across the product lifecycle.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform aerodynamic analysis and CFD simulations to evaluate airflow, lift, drag, stability, control characteristics, pressure distributions, and aerodynamic loads across a range of flight conditions.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize aerodynamic models to improve aircraft performance, efficiency, and overall vehicle design using analytical methods, CFD, and multiphysics simulations.
  • Prepare and optimize CAD models for computational analysis, conduct multidisciplinary simulations, and develop automated analysis workflows to improve engineering efficiency.
  • Support aerodynamic validation through flight testing, wind tunnel testing, and experimental data correlation, performing verification and validation (V&V) of simulation results.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering documentation, and design recommendations to support product development from concept through production.
  • Optimize airframe geometry to improve aerodynamic efficiency, endurance, maneuverability, and overall mission performance.
  • Identify discrepancies between predicted and measured performance and implement model improvements.
  • Support configuration studies for prototype and production aircraft.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support aircraft design, propulsion integration, flight controls, manufacturing, and system-level engineering decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering or Aerodynamics is preferred.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in aerodynamic analysis, CFD, or aircraft performance engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience applying CFD and analytical methods to solve complex aerospace engineering problems.
  • Strong understanding of aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, aircraft performance, and flight physics.
  • Experience performing CFD analyses and interpreting simulation results.
  • Ability to prepare and optimize CAD geometry for computational analysis.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary simulation involving aerodynamic, structural, and thermal interactions.
  • Knowledge of moving-body aerodynamics, rotating components, and propulsion-airframe interactions.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems and engineering configuration management.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
Nice-To-Have
  • Experience developing UAV, eVTOL, or aerospace platforms.
  • Experience with rotorcraft, propeller aerodynamics, or multirotor vehicle design.
  • Familiarity with wind tunnel testing and aerodynamic instrumentation.
  • Experience developing automated simulation workflows using Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience with optimization methods, design space exploration, and parametric studies.
  • Familiarity with defense or aerospace certification and verification processes.
