The University of Miami/UHealth has an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with Acute Care Certification or Physician Assistant (PA) in Miami. The incumbent is responsible for assessing physical and psychosocial status of patients in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients in both acute care and outpatient setting. The APP also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care. This position is Not remote and involves experience with Inpatient Hepatology and outpatient GI and hepatology.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
  • Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities
  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Facilitates the patient's transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with Acute Care Certification or Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the comprehensive assessment and management of patients with Gastroenterology and Hepatology conditions across both inpatient and outpatient settings. The APP will provide high-quality, patient-centered care through detailed history taking, physical examination, diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, patient education, and coordination of multidisciplinary care.
This position requires flexibility and proficiency in both inpatient and outpatient practice. The selected candidate will participate in a blended clinical model that includes approximately 1-3 weeks per month on the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) Hepatology Inpatient Service, with the remaining weeks dedicated to ambulatory practice in the hospital-based clinic at UMH. Outpatient responsibilities typically include 7-8 half-day clinic sessions per week. Depending on divisional and patient care needs, schedules will include a combination of inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, requiring collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, trainees, and multidisciplinary care teams. Candidates must be able to effectively manage complex patients in both settings and ensure seamless transitions of care across the healthcare continuum.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive evaluation and management of Gastroenterology and Hepatology patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Participate in the UMH Hepatology inpatient service, collaborating closely with physicians, APPs, trainees, and multidisciplinary teams to manage complex liver disease patients.
  • Deliver outpatient care through scheduled ambulatory clinic sessions across multiple UHealth locations.
  • Manage acute and chronic GI and Hepatology conditions, order and interpret diagnostic studies, develop treatment plans, and provide patient counseling and education.
  • Ensure continuity of care across care settings, including transitions between inpatient hospitalization and outpatient follow-up.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable practicing in both inpatient and outpatient environments and demonstrate strong clinical judgment, adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to providing exceptional patient care across the continuum of Gastroenterology and Hepatology services

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Master's degree in relevant field
Certification and Licensing:
Valid State of Florida Acute Care APRN License
Valid State of Florida Physician Assistant License
BLS, ACLS
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in Gastroenterology or Hepatology Practice
Previous training or experience in Acute care setting with GI and/or Hepatology practice as APRN or PA.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state and federal health regulations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Performs in tactful and professional manner.
  • CITI Certification for Clinical Research Study participation
  • Previous experience with EPIC EMR software, or demonstrated ability to manage patients in EMR
  • 1 year with preferred specific experience seeing Gastroenterology patients in an outpatient setting
