Job description

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. This position is located at Froedtert and MCW/CFAC and other Inpatient Units.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the inpatient services as a member of the Department of Medicine/Division of Hematology and Oncology
In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Hematology/Oncology/BMT intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the HemOnc/BMT inpatient service.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Hematology/Oncology/BMT services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Join Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  • Participates in ongoing clinical research projects related to the field of hematology/oncology/BMT
Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:
  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive and psychosocial status.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitors effectiveness of plan of care.
  • Educates patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Performs procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Documents within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborates and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.

Preferred Schedule: 10 hours shifts during the week, Monday to Friday, 8:00am-6:00pm, with expected weekend rotations every 4th week, 7:00am-5:00pm.
Position Requirements:
Preferred Experience: Five-year experience as a Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner with at least 1-2 years in a clinic or hospital environment working with chemotherapy or hematology/oncology/BMT patients.
Minimum Education:
Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies
