How much do advanced mechanical design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for advanced mechanical design engineer in the United States is $91,578.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $76,000.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an advanced mechanical design engineer do?

An Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing complex mechanical systems or components. They use advanced engineering principles and computer-aided design (CAD) software to create innovative solutions for products or machinery. Their work often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure that designs meet technical specifications, safety standards, and cost requirements. Additionally, they may oversee prototype development, analyze test data, and make recommendations for design improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced mechanical design engineer?

To thrive as an Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and experience with product design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or CATIA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools, and knowledge of manufacturing processes is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and drive innovative solutions. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable, efficient, and cutting-edge mechanical systems that meet both technical and business requirements.

How does an advanced mechanical design engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Advanced Mechanical Design Engineers frequently work closely with cross-functional teams such as electrical engineers, manufacturing specialists, and project managers throughout the product development cycle. They participate in regular design reviews, contribute to troubleshooting sessions, and coordinate with manufacturing to ensure designs are producible and meet quality standards. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the role often requires integrating feedback from various disciplines to deliver innovative and manufacturable solutions. This collaborative environment helps ensure all technical and project requirements are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Mechanical Design EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, some roles may prefer certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, R&D departments, manufacturing companiesProduct development, manufacturing, engineering consulting
Employer & Industry UsageHigh-tech, aerospace, automotive, industrial equipmentConsumer products, machinery, automotive, general manufacturing

The Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer typically works on complex projects requiring advanced technical skills and specialized knowledge, often in high-tech or specialized industries. Mechanical Design Engineers focus on developing and improving mechanical products, often with less complexity. Both roles require strong engineering fundamentals, but the advanced role involves more complex problem-solving and innovative design tasks.
