Position Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a calm, professional manner during a crisis or emergency situation at all times within the patient care environment.
  • Performs comprehensive nursing assessments for oncology patients.
  • Reviews laboratory values, diagnostic testing, treatment plans, and clinical documentation prior to provider visits and treatment initiation.
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret chemotherapy orders accurately (calculates BSA and ANC correctly).
  • Assesses treatment-related toxicities and communicates findings to providers.
  • Monitors patients for disease progression, complications, and treatment
  • Provides triage and symptom management for acute and chronic oncology-related issues.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify signs and symptoms of oncologic emergencies and provide management appropriately and quickly.
  • Establishes priorities for patient care based on patient needs as evidenced by completion of assigned duties within shift.
  • Participates in survivorship planning and supportive care initiatives.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams, utilizes professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Reviews and interprets laboratory results, relaying critical lab results to providers and documenting in EPIC in a timely manner.
  • Reinforces informed consent and treatment understanding.
  • Educates patients on treatment side effects, emergency symptoms, and self-management strategies.
  • Uses established lines of communication for resolution of problems and interpersonal conflict.
  • Verbalizes understanding of patient diagnosis and interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Provides individualized education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, oral agents, symptom management, and supportive care.
  • Escalates concerns appropriately to nursing leadership team using chain of command.
  • Completes nursing documents accurately and in a timely manner following Joint Commission Standards.
  • Proficient use of EPIC for accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, referrals to multidisciplinary team, and communication among staff.
  • Safely and correctly initiates and documents nursing interventions in emergency situations.
  • Follows approved protocol in receiving critical results and performing timely and accurate communication and follow-up.
  • Verbalizes and demonstrates understanding use of equipment in the department.
  • Follows chemotherapy/biotherapy/immunotherapy protocols as per hospital policy, including pre-administration checklist review, two-nurse double-checking of each drug requiring these checks, patient monitoring during administration, and post administration responsibilities such as proper disposal of used/empty medication bags, discontinuing of peripheral lines or de-accessing ports, discharge instructions, and confirming next appointments.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the safe administration of chemotherapy and disposal of chemotherapy wastes and equipment as per ONS guidelines.
  • Identifies acute local and systemic reactions as a result of extravasation or anaphylaxis in association with specific chemotherapy drugs and appropriate interventions.
  • Verbalizes/demonstrates understanding blood product transfusion protocols and handling of blood transfusion reactions.
  • Verbalizes understanding and demonstrate use of Chemo spill kit and use of approved PPE during administration and disposal of Chemotherapy/Biotherapy based on institutional policy and procedure.
  • Verbalizes understanding of signs and symptoms of oncologic emergencies and emergency or symptom management.
  • Reinforces treatment goals and ensure understanding through patient-centered teaching.
  • Collaborates with physicians, pharmacy, laboratory services, research teams, social work, navigation, and support services, referring patients as needed based on identified or reported needs.

Qualifications

  • License/Registration/Certification
    • Current Licensure in the state of Florida. BSN preferred. BLS required/
  • Education
    • Associate's Degree in Nursing. BSN preferred
  • Experience
    • Level II: Minimum of 2 years in area of specialty in an inpatient or outpatient setting, and/or medical / surgical experience. Applicants must also possess the skills to independently perform the job requirements, tasks and responsibilities of the position.
