What is an Adult RBT?

An Adult RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) works with adults with developmental disabilities or behavioral challenges, using applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques to improve daily living skills and independence. They implement behavior intervention plans designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to support skill development, communication, and positive behaviors. This role often involves working in homes, clinics, or community settings to help clients meet their personal goals.

What does an Adult RBT do?

As an Adult RBT, your day typically involves working one-on-one with adult clients to implement individualized behavior intervention plans under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). You may be responsible for collecting and logging behavioral data, supporting clients with daily living skills, and reinforcing positive behavioral changes. Collaboration with other team members, such as therapists and caregivers, is common to ensure continuity of care and consistent application of strategies. This role requires flexibility, as daily activities can vary based on each client's needs and progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Adult RBT?

To thrive as an Adult Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you need a solid understanding of behavior analysis principles, data collection, and implementation of behavioral interventions, usually supported by completion of the RBT certification. Strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to build rapport with adult clients are key soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure effective support, progress tracking, and positive outcomes for adults receiving behavioral therapy.

What other jobs can an adult RBT get?

An adult RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) can transition into roles such as behavior technician, behavioral therapist, or autism support specialist, often working in clinics, schools, or home settings. These positions typically require knowledge of behavior analysis, and additional certifications like BCBA or BCaBA can expand career opportunities in behavior therapy and supervision.

Job description

North Shore Pediatric Therapy - 1751 S Naperville Rd, Wheaton, IL 60189
$19/hour to start. $22.50/hour once RBT certified (paid training)
Multiple schedules available - mornings and evenings, including Saturdays
This is an entry-level ABA therapy position at North Shore Pediatric Therapy. No prior clinical experience required. We're hiring for both full-time and part-time roles, and we will train you, pay for your RBT certification, and give you real mentorship from day one.
What we need is someone who is good with kids, stays calm when things get hard, and wants to build something - a career in behavioral health, child psychology, ABA, special education, occupational therapy, or speech-language pathology.
What a Behavior Technician Does
As a Behavior Technician (BT) at North Shore Pediatric Therapy, you work 1:1 with autistic children ages 2-12. You implement therapy plans built by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and show up consistently, session after session, as a steady, supportive presence in each child's day.
You'll spend the vast majority of your day with kids. You'll be on your feet. You'll be engaged. You'll be the most consistent adult in some of these kids' days, and that matters more than most job descriptions will tell you.
What We Do Differently
At North Shore Pediatric Therapy, we practice assent-based, neuroaffirming care - which means we follow each child's lead, honor their boundaries, and build trust before we build skills. You'll work alongside occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and mental health professionals in a genuinely interdisciplinary environment.

Who Thrives Here

  • Stay calm and grounded when things get hard
  • Find meaning in showing up consistently for someone who needs it
