Job description


Contract Position- Adult Basic Education Instructor

Contract Opportunity 8:30 AM โ€“ 1:30 PM

Monday through Friday

Compensation: $25/hr.


Position Summary

The position of Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instructor at Wesley Community Center is a contract position with a fluctuating schedule. Instructors are needed on a per-cohort basis that last between a 6-8 week span of time, 2-4 times a year. Contract amount is to be paid in 2 lump sums: at the start of the cohort and at the end of the cohort. Dates of cohort cycles are to be determined and bound in agreement through contract by Instructorโ€™s availability and coordinated with the Director of Financial Stability Programs. The Adult Basic Education Instructor is primarily responsible for the instruction of adult learners and maintaining student progress records. The ABE Instructor provides instruction, evaluation and follow-up to students. The curriculum being used is the Healthcare Career Bridge Curriculum developed by Women Employed and City Colleges of Chicago. The lessons are designed to improve the basic reading skills of adult learners, while at the same time exposing students to key healthcare issues that are relevant to their lives and the healthcare field. This intensive course will prepare students to advance their reading and math levels as measured by the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and fully articulate their personalized training and employment plan in the healthcare field.

ยท Maintain student attendance records.

ยท Monitor student progress.

ยท Prepare submit and discuss progress reports as required by the agency.

ยท Possess computer skills and knowledge of tutorial programs.

ยท Prepare student educational plans.

ยท Follow-up with clients in-person and via technologies.

ยท Enter data in Excel and database system(s).

ยท Lead program related presentations.


Minimum Requirements

ยท Bachelorโ€™s degree required.

ยท Exceptional Adult Basic Education skills required to promote basic adult instruction.

ยท Excellent communication, organizational and classroom management skills are needed.


While in this position, the employee is expected to seek to understand, communicate appropriately and effectively, build a positive, professional rapport with all clients and staff using active listening and conflict resolution skills
