What is an adult abuse registry?

An Adult Abuse Registry is a confidential database maintained by state or local agencies that records the names of individuals who have been found, through investigation, to have committed abuse, neglect, or exploitation against vulnerable adults. The registry is primarily used by employers, licensing boards, and care facilities to screen potential employees or volunteers who may have unsupervised access to adults who are elderly or have disabilities. Its purpose is to protect vulnerable populations from harm by preventing individuals with substantiated abuse findings from working in positions of trust or care.
