Adtech Engineer information

What is an adtech engineer?

Adtech Engineers are technology professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the digital advertising industry. They work on platforms that enable the buying, selling, targeting, and analysis of online ads, such as ad servers, real-time bidding systems, and data management platforms. Their role often involves integrating advertising technologies, optimizing ad delivery, and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. Adtech Engineers collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and marketers to deliver effective advertising solutions.

What are some common challenges an adtech engineer faces when integrating new advertising technologies with existing platforms?

Adtech Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new advertising technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data privacy compliance, and minimizing disruption to current ad delivery pipelines. Balancing rapid implementation with thorough testing can be complex, especially given the fast-paced evolution of ad tech standards and third-party tools. Successful engineers proactively collaborate with product managers, data teams, and external vendors to troubleshoot issues and develop scalable solutions that support the organization's advertising objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adtech engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adtech Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, programming (especially JavaScript, Python, or Java), and a clear understanding of digital advertising technologies and protocols. Familiarity with ad servers, programmatic platforms (like Google Ad Manager or The Trade Desk), SDKs, APIs, and industry certifications such as IAB Digital Ad Operations are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you navigate complex integrations and work effectively with product, sales, and analytics teams. These skills are essential to optimize ad delivery, ensure technical compliance, and drive successful advertising outcomes in a rapidly evolving ecosystem.

You need to be comfortable working with executive‑level stakeholders and experienced product leaders, and can easily facilitate conversations with both technical and non‑technical audiences.

We’re on a mission to change how organizations perceive and use people data, and we hold true to our core values of: 1) Be an excellent communicator; 2) Operate with transparency; 3) Provide leverage, not optimization; 4) Win when our customers win; 5) Act with integrity and trust.

Responsibilities
  • Understand business problems to find the best technical solution among all possible
  • Design and deliver new workflows, tests, and POCs for clients, and make recommendations for new use cases
  • Partner with commercial sales as the technical arm of relationship selling
  • Develop deep relationships with the client’s technical teams and respect from their commercial organizations
  • Develop expertise regarding internal tools and administration
  • Define features, phases, and solution requirements, providing specifications according to which the solution is defined, managed, and delivered
  • Describe the structure, characteristics, behavior, and other aspects of the technology to project stakeholders
  • Establish & maintain internal relationships with adjoining teams to ensure the seamless external experience
  • Advise teams on customer feedback, PoV, and effectiveness of collateral
  • Document customer business objectives, workflow diagrams, and success criteria
  • Participate in the creation and delivery of customer‑facing presentations (QBRs, Pitches, etc.)
  • Conduct/participate in opportunity pre‑ and post‑mortems, assisting with documentation
  • Assist with account planning and whitespace analysis
Requirements
  • Minimum of 2+ years in an external client‑facing role with great EQ is essential
  • Prior experience in Solution(s) Role or AdTech/MarTech/Data industry
  • Scrappiness. We don’t have all the answers, but you’ll need to find them
  • Basic computer science skills or interest in self‑learning – Command‑Line and SQL proficiency will jumpstart your time to value
  • Great communication skills internally and externally – Prompt response and action when needed, people rarely need to follow up with you
  • Startup personality: smart, ethical, friendly, cross‑functional, hardworking, and proactive
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors and/or Masters degree in a technical discipline (Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or another quantitative field
  • Ability to work in ambiguous environments with little direction
  • Technical experience with analytical tools, methodologies, and design
  • Willingness and desire to learn and adopt new skills – both technical and non‑technical – to craft and deliver the best solutions

Compensation range: $150,000 – $175,000 a year
