Job Title

Sr. Backend EngineerAbout your role

Our Employees team is dedicated to building tools that help merchants manage, schedule, and empower their workforce, optimize labor costs, and streamline team operations. As a Sr. Backend Engineer, you will serve as a primary technical architect and leader driving the long-term evolution of our employee management platform, shift scheduling systems, labor tracking mechanics, and enterprise payroll/workforce management integrations. You will partner closely with Principal Engineers, Infrastructure, Product, and Design leadership to define technical roadmaps, establish architectural standards, and solve complex scalability challenges across our global backend ecosystem.

What you'll do
  • Architectural Leadership: Drive the strategic technical vision and system architecture for Clover's Employees platform, shift scheduling engines, and enterprise integrations.
  • Scale & Ecosystem Engineering: Design, build, and govern resilient, high-throughput microservices and APIs powering smart payment devices, merchant web dashboards, and third-party enterprise integrations.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Product, Design, and Engineering leadership to shape product strategy, break down ambiguous technical problems, and translate complex business domains into scalable, future-proof software architectures.
  • Technical Excellence & Governance: Set engineering standards, establish best practices for code quality and security, and lead complex system design reviews across the organization.
  • Domain Data Architecture: Partner with Infrastructure and Data teams to design highly available, multi-tenant data models that support large-scale workforce tracking, real-time scheduling, and enterprise data sync.
  • Mentorship & Multiplier Effect: Elevate the engineering team's collective capabilities by mentoring Senior and Mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical rigor, and driving continuous operational improvements.
  • System Health & Observability: Oversee overall platform reliability, resilience, and performance, serving as a escalation point for complex architectural issues and participating in an on-call rotation.
Experience you'll need to have
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Seniority: 10+ years of hands-on professional software engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of architecting and operating mission-critical, large-scale backend systems.
  • JVM Mastery: Deep expertise in Java and the broader JVM ecosystem.
  • Frameworks & Microservices: Extensive experience designing, building, and decomposing distributed microservices using Spring Boot.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Hands-on experience architecting cloud-native systems, deploying and operating containers in Kubernetes, and managing Infrastructure as Code via Terraform (GCP experience preferred).
  • Advanced Data Systems: Proven track record in schema design, data modeling, query optimization, and transaction management across both SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL datastores at high scale.
  • API Architecture: Deep expertise in RESTful API design, versioning, security standards, and building developer-friendly integration contracts for internal and external partners.
  • Technical Leadership & Influence: Proven ability to drive consensus across engineering teams, guide architectural decisions, and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical executive stakeholders.
Experience that would be great to have
  • Domain Expertise: Prior experience architecting workforce management, HR tech, shift scheduling, payroll engines, or deep integrations with enterprise systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, Kronos).
  • Cloud Platform Experience: Direct production experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services and infrastructure.
  • AI & Intelligent Systems: Experience or interest in leveraging Generative AI / LLMs for smart scheduling automation, labor forecasting algorithms, or predictive workforce optimization.
  • AI-Assisted Velocity: Proficiency with AI-assisted developer tooling (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude/ChatGPT workflows) to accelerate prototyping, system documentation, and engineering output.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
