Job Summary
Purpose or Role of the Position.
The purpose of the Illges Gallery Student Assistant position is to support the daily operations of the gallery by creating a welcoming, organized, and respectful environment for all visitors. Illges Gallery Student Assistant greet guests, help protect and monitor artwork, answer questions about exhibitions, and share information about current exhibitions and gallery programs. They also assist with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, prepare the gallery for events, and serve as professional ambassadors during exhibition openings and public programs by engaging with visitors and ensuring a positive gallery experience.
Responsibilities
Illges Gallery Student Assistant supports the daily operations of the gallery by creating a welcoming, organized, and respectful environment for visitors. Responsibilities include greeting guests, monitoring artwork to help ensure its safety, answering questions about exhibitions, and sharing information about the gallery's current exhibitions and programs. Illges Gallery Student Assistant also assist with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, help prepare the gallery for events, and serve as ambassadors during exhibition openings and public programs by engaging with visitors and representing the gallery in a professional and friendly manner.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as a student in good academic standing.- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage courteously and professionally with diverse audiences.- Friendly, dependable, and customer service-oriented.- Ability to work independently while remaining attentive to visitors and artwork.- Responsible, punctual, and able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.- Interest in art, museums, galleries, or cultural programming; coursework in art or art history is preferred but not required.- Ability to learn and communicate information about current exhibitions and gallery programs.- Comfortable standing and walking for extended periods during shifts.- Ability to assist with the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, including lifting and moving materials up to 25 pounds.- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, for exhibition openings and special events.- Ability to follow gallery policies, safety procedures, and handling guidelines for artwork.- Experience in customer service, event support, or campus engagement is preferred but not required.- Ability to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is preferred but not required.
Proposed Salary
$12/hourly.

Conditions of Employment

Position Classification :
Federal Work-Study (FWS) positions are grouped into three general levels based on job duties and required skills:

• Entry-Level: Basic tasks with little to no prior experience required. Duties may include clerical work, customer service, or general office support.
• Intermediate: Positions that require some prior experience or specific skills. Duties may include tutoring, lab assistance, or more independent administrative work.
• Advanced: Roles that require specialized skills, training, or significant responsibility. Duties may include research assistance, technical support, or leadership roles.

Procedure for Determining Pay Rate :
Federal Work-Study (FWS) pay rates are based on the type of job, responsibilities, and skills required. Pay is set within the university's student wage guidelines and follows federal and state minimum wage laws.
Rates may vary by position and are determined in coordination with Financial Aid, based on available funding and the student's FWS award.
Evaluation Procedures and Schedules
Applicants for the Illges Gallery Student Assistant position will be evaluated using a holistic review process that considers the overall qualifications and potential of each candidate. Selection will be based on a combination of the following factors:- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.- Customer service experience or the ability to provide a welcoming and professional visitor experience.- Reliability, responsibility, and dependability.- Interest in art, museums, galleries, or cultural programming.- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.- Availability to work scheduled shifts, including evenings and weekends for exhibitions and special events.- Relevant work, volunteer, leadership, or campus involvement that demonstrates transferable skills.- Willingness and ability to learn gallery procedures, exhibition information, and artwork handling protocols.Candidates may be asked to participate in an interview to assess their communication skills, professionalism, customer service approach, and ability to respond appropriately to visitor interactions and gallery situations. Final selection will be based on the candidate's overall qualifications and potential to contribute to a positive, safe, and engaging gallery environment.
