What is an adjunct Ob Gyn?

Adjunct Ob Gyns are medical professionals who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology and typically work part-time, often in a teaching or clinical role at a university or hospital. They may be responsible for instructing medical students or residents, providing patient care, and contributing to research. Unlike full-time faculty, adjunct Ob Gyns usually have other primary employment, such as private practice, and bring their real-world experience into academic or clinical settings. Their involvement helps bridge the gap between medical education and clinical practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adjunct Ob Gyn?

To thrive as an Adjunct OB GYN, you need a medical degree, board certification in obstetrics and gynecology, and experience in both clinical practice and teaching. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR), ultrasound equipment, and simulation-based teaching tools is typically required. Excellent communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster effective learning and patient care environments. These competencies ensure high standards of education, patient safety, and professional collaboration in academic healthcare settings.

What is the typical balance between clinical duties and teaching responsibilities for an adjunct Ob Gyn?

As an Adjunct Ob Gyn, you can expect to split your time between clinical practice and teaching, depending on the needs of the institution and your specific contract. Typically, adjunct faculty may have a lighter teaching load compared to full-time professors, focusing on clinical supervision of medical students and residents during rounds, lectures, and occasional seminars. You'll also collaborate closely with other faculty members to develop educational materials and coordinate patient care, making adaptability and strong communication skills essential. This balance allows you to stay engaged in patient care while contributing to the next generation of physicians.
