Adjunct Data Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Adjunct Data Science Instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adjunct Data Science Instructor, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and machine learning, typically supported by an advanced degree in data science or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools, version control systems, and online learning platforms is essential, along with any relevant teaching certifications. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage and mentor students are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure effective instruction, student engagement, and the ability to translate complex concepts into practical learning outcomes.

What is an adjunct data science professor?

An adjunct data science professor is a part-time instructor hired by a college or university to teach data science courses. Unlike full-time faculty, adjuncts typically teach one or more classes per term and may have other professional commitments outside of academia. They are responsible for preparing course materials, delivering lectures, assessing student work, and staying current in the field. Adjuncts bring practical industry experience to the classroom, helping to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application.

What are the typical challenges an Adjunct Data Science instructor faces when balancing teaching responsibilities with other professional commitments?

Adjunct Data Science instructors often juggle teaching with other professional roles, such as industry positions or research projects. This can make time management a significant challenge, especially when preparing lectures, grading assignments, and staying current with rapidly evolving data science tools. Additionally, adjuncts may have limited access to institutional resources or support, requiring them to be proactive in seeking collaboration and professional development. Despite these hurdles, many find the role rewarding due to opportunities to share real-world experience with students and expand professional networks within academia.

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah is seeking applications for tenure-line faculty at all levels (Assistant, Associate or full Professor, depending on experience and qualifications).
The Division, Department and University have vibrant, collaborative research communities spanning the translational spectrum. Current areas of research in the division include, but are not limited to, basic, translational, and clinical research in the areas of chronic kidney disease, genetics, dialysis, vascular access, molecular physiology, hypertension, and health equity. A new Cardio-Renal & Metabolism Center, under the direction of Nephrology and Cardiovascular Medicine faculty, was inaugurated in 2024. Nephrology faculty hold adjunct appointments in Nutrition & Integrative Physiology, Population Health Sciences, Human Genetics, Pathology, and Biomedical Engineering. New Division faculty will be supported in seeking appointments in these or other departments based on research area, and will also have access to graduate programs through these departments. Institutional initiatives (https://uofuhealth.utah.edu/research/areas-initiatives) include Diabetes & Metabolism; Immunology, Inflammation & Infectious Disease; Genomic Medicine; Digital Health; and Data Exploration and Learning for Precision Health Intelligence.
These initiatives, which many Nephrology faculty participate in, provide intellectual communities, including seminars, workshops, and scientific retreats; opportunities for collaboration; and seed grants and other research funding. Seed grants are also offered by the Department of Internal Medicine, the School of Medicine, and the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences. Nephrology faculty are also investigators in the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute and the University of Utah Molecular Medicine Program (U2M2). U2M2 provides an interdisciplinary home for wet bench/early translational researchers from across clinical departments, and newly recruited faculty may be eligible for joint recruitment into U2M2. Many of the MD and PhD faculty in Nephrology hold joint appointments at the Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, offering opportunities for VA funding. New faculty may be eligible for VA joint appointments. Core facilities (https://cores.utah.edu) provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and expert consultation, across a broad range of scientific techniques, including microscopy, flow cytometry, genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, genetic engineering, drug discovery, and others. Consultative services and support are also available in the areas of biostatistics, study design, grant development, and technology licensing and commercialization. The Utah Population Database facilitates family-based genetic studies. Career development support across career stages is available through multiple departmental and institutional resources.
