What is an adjunct creative writing instructor?

Adjunct creative writing instructors are part-time faculty members who teach creative writing courses at colleges or universities. They are typically hired on a contractual basis for one or more semesters, rather than holding a permanent, full-time position. Adjuncts often bring professional writing experience to the classroom and may teach courses in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, or other creative genres. Their responsibilities usually include preparing course materials, leading workshops, grading assignments, and mentoring students in their writing development.

What are the typical responsibilities of an adjunct creative writing instructor during a semester?

As an Adjunct Creative Writing instructor, you are usually responsible for designing course syllabi, leading weekly workshops or lectures, providing individualized feedback on student writing, and evaluating student performance through assignments and participation. You may also hold office hours to support students and participate in occasional departmental meetings. The role often requires balancing independent course management with collaboration across the English or Creative Writing department to ensure curriculum alignment and student success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an adjunct creative writing instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Adjunct Creative Writing instructor, you typically need an advanced degree in English, Creative Writing, or a related field, along with a strong writing portfolio and teaching experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) like Canvas or Blackboard and workshop-based teaching methods is commonly required. Outstanding communication, mentorship, and the ability to foster a creative, inclusive classroom environment are vital soft skills. These qualifications and skills ensure effective instruction, student engagement, and the development of students’ creative and critical abilities.
