Job description

Additive Manufacturing Manager
Do you have a passion for Additive Manufacturing that equals your desire to lead and develop others? Penn United Technologies is now hiring for an Additive Manufacturing Manager to lead our growing department.
In this role, you would be responsible for leading the strategic implementation, operation, and scaling of additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities within Penn United. This role bridges advanced manufacturing technology with production execution - overseeing the day to day 3D printing operations, driving process development, managing a technical team, and identifying high-value applications to optimize production efficiency, cost, and product quality.
What You'll Do :
  • Oversee daily scheduling, capacity planning, and execution across all additive manufacturing systems.
  • Ensure maximum equipment uptime, routine preventative maintenance, and timely calibration of printing and post-processing hardware.
  • Establish standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and quality control protocols for design, pre-processing, printing, and post-processing steps (e.g heat treating, stress relief, machining, surface finishing).
  • Manage raw material supply chains, inventory levels (powders, resins, filaments, consumables), and vendor relationships.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new AM technologies, equipment, software tools, and material systems to improve production capabilities.
  • Lead Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) initiatives, collaborating with R&D and product engineering to redesign parts for light weighting, assembly consolidation, or customer performance.
  • Optimize printing parameters and build layouts to maximize output density, reduce print failures, and minimize material waste.
  • Lead and manage the schedules and activities of team members engaged in design, manufacturing, development, assembly, and/or inspection of product, ensuring all resources are utilized efficiently and goals are accomplished.
  • Select, train and motivate personnel, set goals and support career development and provide regular performance evaluations and feedback.
  • Provide guidance and support to engineers, technicians, and machine operators, make decisions regarding disciplinary action, ensure adherence to safety and quality protocols, company policies and best practices.

What We're Looking For :
Qualified candidates should possess:
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field
  • Required: 5 + years of hands-on experience in additive manufacturing environments (preferably both polymer and metal systems)
  • Required: 3+ years of direct supervisory or team leadership experience in a production or advanced engineering role

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, company capabilities and customer needs.
  • Deep understanding of material properties (polymers, titanium, nickel superalloys, stainless steel, aluminum) and their behavior during processing and thermal cycles.
  • Competent in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF / DMLS / SLM), Thermal treatment, EDM wire-cutting, CNC machining, bead blasting and chemical smoothing
  • Demonstrated track record of scaling AM from prototyping/R&D into production-level volume.
  • Knowledge of quality standards (ISO 9001 / AS9100/ ISO 13485, ASTM F42 standards, GD&T, metallurgical testing)
  • Ability to keep up to date with new developments and technologies
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, trouble-shooting skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and able to quickly learn and use computer software effectively (CAD/CAM, SolidWorks, NX, Inventor, HRIS), Slicing and Build Prep (Materialise Magics, nTop), CAD file validation).
  • Strong ability to professionally communicate using both verbal and written skills.
