What is an ADAS test engineer?

ADAS Test Engineers are professionals who specialize in testing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in vehicles. Their primary role is to ensure that safety features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and emergency braking function correctly and meet regulatory standards. They design and execute test plans, analyze data, and report on system performance. ADAS Test Engineers often work closely with software developers and automotive engineers to improve overall vehicle safety and user experience.

What are some common challenges faced by an ADAS test engineer during system validation?

ADAS Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately replicating real-world driving scenarios in both simulation and on-road tests, ensuring sensor data integrity, and managing complex integration with vehicle systems. Coordinating with software, hardware, and safety teams to resolve issues discovered during testing is also a key part of the role. Additionally, keeping up with evolving automotive standards and regulations can add complexity to the validation process. Effective communication and a strong attention to detail are essential for overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ADAS test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ADAS Test Engineer, you need a solid background in automotive engineering, electronics, or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree and experience with vehicle systems. Familiarity with tools such as CANoe, MATLAB/Simulink, and ADAS simulation software, along with knowledge of ISO 26262 safety standards, is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital for diagnosing issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the safe and reliable development and validation of advanced driver-assistance systems, which are critical for modern vehicle safety and performance.

What is the difference between Adas Test Engineer vs Vehicle Systems Test Engineer?

AspectAdas Test EngineerVehicle Systems Test Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in ADAS or automotive testingEngineering degree, certifications in vehicle systems or testing
Work EnvironmentAutomotive labs, testing tracks, simulation environmentsManufacturing plants, testing facilities, labs
Industry UsageFocused on advanced driver-assistance systems like sensors, cameras, and algorithmsBroader vehicle systems including powertrain, chassis, and electronics

Adas Test Engineers specialize in testing and validating advanced driver-assistance systems, focusing on sensors, cameras, and software algorithms. Vehicle Systems Test Engineers have a broader scope, testing various vehicle components and systems. While both roles require engineering expertise and testing certifications, Adas Test Engineers concentrate on safety-critical ADAS features, whereas Vehicle Systems Test Engineers cover a wider range of vehicle functionalities.

ย
We are seeking a detail-oriented and responsibleย Driver/Pilotย to support ourย Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)ย data collection project. The role involves operating a test vehicle equipped with advanced sensors, driving along predefined routes, and ensuring accurate data acquisition under different driving and environmental conditions.
ย
You will work closely with the local coordinator and technical team to ensure high-quality data, maintain equipment, and adhere to safety and confidentiality protocols.
Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the test vehicle across various road and traffic conditions.
  • Travels from Detroit and Northern states to Canada.
  • Follow assigned routes with specific driving objectives (e.g., overtaking car carriers, stopping at crossings, or maintaining specific speeds).
  • Update or adjust routes as required in coordination with the local coordinator.
  • Comply with all local traffic regulations and project-specific safety requirements.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
  • Monitor and maintain the rooftop sensor system, including regular cleaning (approximately every 1-2 hours).
  • Oversee the external battery for the measurement system, ensuring it remains charged and operational.
  • Handle prototype vehicles with care, maintaining strict confidentiality and following prescribed covering/protection procedures.
Data Handling & System Management
  • Manage and replace data storage media (SSDs, HDDs) as required.
  • Operate copying stations and perform data backups, following automated processes and data integrity standards.
  • Start, stop, and monitor measurement software during data collection sessions.
  • Use remote desktop connections and related software tools for system monitoring and troubleshooting.
Key Requirements
  • Valid driver's license with an excellent driving record.
  • Comfortable driving long hours in varying conditions (urban, rural, highway).
  • Basic technical literacy, especially in handling computers, external drives, and remote software tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to following procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining clear communication with the coordination team.
Preferred qualifications
  • Prior experience with ADAS, autonomous vehicle testing, or automotive data collection projects.
  • Understanding of data handling and backup procedures.
  • Familiarity with vehicle electronics, sensor systems, or measurement software.
  • Technical or engineering background (automotive, IT, or related field).
Work Environment
  • Field-based role involving significant time on the road with frequent travels.
  • Requires flexibility for varying schedules, weather conditions, and route adjustments.
  • May involve occasional travel or overnight stays depending on project scope.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information.
