The Role
We are seeking a creative and highly technical Staff Systems Safety Engineer to lead ADAS system safety for ADAS sensors, controllers, and key Software Defined Vehicle hardware such as Ethernet switches and IVI boards. In this role, you will apply deep functional safety expertise and system-level thinking to develop hardware safety cases supporting ADAS features from L1 to L4, helping advance GM's vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. You will provide technical leadership to a team of 7-8 System Safety Engineers, setting direction and ensuring delivery of safety cases and aligned safety deliverables across the VDP process to meet vehicle program deadlines.
This position also includes leading safety and technical reviews with PRB members and partners, guiding complex problem-solving, and driving issue resolution across global and GMNA cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate brings strong project planning, independent judgment, and a deep understanding of hardware design, software implementation, and safety-driven solution development.
What You'll Do
  • Lead a technical team of ADAS System Safety Engineers to develop systems safety analysis, hazard identification, and risk mitigations using both qualitative and quantitative methods for responsible hardware
  • Perform safety product reviews prior to safety formal review to ensure a quality delivery
  • Collaborate with product engineering, software engineering, development, verification, and validation teams to ensure safety deliverables on time
  • Guide development of external suppliers to facilitate timely delivery of safety critical system content
  • Stay abreast of new technology and safety analysis techniques
  • Mentor & develop internal and external organizational partners (including Global teams) on safety critical system and process-specific knowledge

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree
  • 7+ years of engineering experience in functional safety with safety critical systems in Automotive industry
  • Ability to understand complex technical systems
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to diverse team members
  • Hands-on experience with hazard analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), software safety analysis, and other safety analysis tools and techniques
  • Expert and certificate of ISO 26262 or other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C
  • Understanding of standards of ISO 21448 (Safety of the Intended Function)
  • Understanding of emerging standards of ISO 8800 AI/ML (Road vehicles - Safety and artificial intelligence), ISO8926 and ISO5083 etc
  • Understanding of fundamentals of Semiconductor and SoC (System on Chip)
  • Experience with Object Sensing technologies (camera, radar, lidar), ADAS controller
  • Experience working with safety diagnostic monitors
  • DFSS Black Belt

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree
  • 10+ or more years of engineering experience with systems safety analysis, systems, or active safety features including Human machine interactions
  • Software design, analysis, development, validation
  • Knowledge of Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition or Model Based System Engineering

Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
