What is an ADAS Algorithm Engineer?

ADAS Algorithm Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize algorithms for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) used in vehicles. Their work involves creating software that enables features like adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, and more. They use sensor data from cameras, radar, and lidar to interpret the vehicle's surroundings and make real-time driving decisions. These engineers typically have backgrounds in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields, and are skilled in areas such as machine learning, signal processing, and embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ADAS Algorithm Engineer?

To excel as an ADAS Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, machine learning, sensor fusion, and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with programming languages like C++ and Python, as well as expertise in tools such as MATLAB, ROS, and automotive simulation platforms, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the development of reliable and innovative advanced driver-assistance systems crucial for vehicle safety and automation.

How does an ADAS Algorithm Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development cycle?

ADAS Algorithm Engineers often work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and systems integrators throughout the development process. They collaborate to ensure that algorithms for functions like lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, or emergency braking integrate seamlessly with vehicle sensors and hardware. Regular meetings and code reviews are common, as is joint validation of algorithm performance on both simulation platforms and real vehicles. This collaborative approach ensures safety standards are met and project milestones are achieved efficiently.

What is the difference between Adas Algorithm Engineer vs Sensor Fusion Engineer?

AspectAdas Algorithm EngineerSensor Fusion Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; experience with automotive systemsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of sensor systems
Work EnvironmentAutomotive industry, R&D labs, embedded systemsAutomotive and robotics industries, embedded and software development
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, autonomous vehicle companiesAutomotive OEMs, sensor manufacturers, autonomous vehicle developers

Both roles focus on automotive sensor systems, but Adas Algorithm Engineers primarily develop algorithms for driver assistance features, while Sensor Fusion Engineers integrate multiple sensor data sources for accurate environment perception. The roles often overlap but differ in their core focus areas within autonomous driving technology.

How much do ADAS Algorithm Engineers make?

ADAS Algorithm Engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in computer vision and sensor fusion can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000. Compensation may also include bonuses and stock options in some organizations.

Job description

Summary

We are currently looking for an ADAS Algorithm Developer to join our team in Troy, Michigan. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the feature control logic, state management, and behavioral architecture for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving (AD) functions.

This role involves defining how ADAS features engage, operate, interact, degrade, and disengage under various driving conditions to deliver safe, intuitive, and robust customer experiences. The candidate will collaborate closely with systems, software, calibration, integration, safety, and validation teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop mode management algorithms for ADAS and Automated Driving applications such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), Collision Avoidance, Lane Keeping Assist, and Hands-Off Highway Assist.
  • Design and implement Stateflow-based state machines governing feature engagement, disengagement, feature transitions, and driver takeover behavior.
  • Develop feature arbitration and coordination logic across multiple ADAS functions to ensure predictable and safe vehicle behavior.
  • Define operational logic for system degradation, fallback strategies, fault handling, and driver notification mechanisms.
  • Translate vehicle-level and system-level requirements into deployable algorithm designs.
  • Verify and optimize algorithm performance using simulation, resimulation, and vehicle testing activities.
  • Investigate real-world driving events and perform data analysis to evaluate algorithm behavior and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support functional safety and SOTIF activities by implementing safety-related monitoring and operational safeguards.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, integration, calibration, validation, and HMI teams to deliver customer-ready features.
  • Document algorithm designs, verification results, technical decisions, and development artifacts according to established engineering processes.

Need to Haves (Basic Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in ADAS, Automated Driving, or automotive control system development.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for algorithm design and implementation.
  • Experience developing state machines, decision logic, or event-driven control architectures.
  • Knowledge of vehicle dynamics, control theory, and systems engineering principles.
  • Experience analyzing test data and troubleshooting complex system behaviors.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
