Job description

Description
The Company
Come build on our integrated platform with industry-leading talent, world-class partners, and freedom to innovate.
Liberty Mutual Investments (LMI) is the investment firm for Liberty Mutual Group (Liberty). With deep expertise in fixed income, equity, and alternative strategies, LMI invests more than $100B of long-term capital globally, and has a team of nearly 300 investment, finance, and operations professionals located in Boston, MA, and New York, NY. LMI has a clear purpose: drive economic growth, build enduring businesses side-by-side with our partners, and generate superior risk-adjusted returns that secure Liberty's promises.
LMI offers the best of both worlds - the look and feel of a boutique investment firm with the reputation and financial strength of a global leader. As the investment firm of a mutual with long-term capital, LMI has a single client mandate. This gives us the freedom to focus on what we do best.
Our portfolio spans a broad spectrum of public and private investments, and we are committed to expanding our capabilities and our toolkit in support of our mission. We invest across diverse asset classes, financial structures, and industries, including real estate, digital infrastructure, healthcare, renewable energy, and technology-with the aim of creating value and powering innovation. We pride ourselves on our extensive network of mutually beneficial partnerships, and we use our substantial influence, capital, and energy to drive towards a better future. #LMI
The Position:
The Impact Investing mandate is focused on generating meaningful social impact in three key areas: (i) boosting social mobility, (ii) expanding access to essential services, and (iii) enhancing resiliency, revitalization, and adaptation. LMI has earmarked $1 billion in balance sheet capital to support the mandate and is seeking commercial returns in tandem with compelling social impact.
Financially, we believe we can generate exceptional returns within this strategy and will focus on private investments, including direct investments, fund investments and co-investments by identifying best-in-breed partners and leveraging the unique advantages that our mutual structure and capital base provides. Notably, we have a unique ability to:
  • Invest across longer horizons and in more complicated structures and projects.
  • To make both limited partnership commitments as well as invest directly into projects and companies.
  • Form deep and lasting relationships with partners
  • Deep internal expertise across a range of asset classes
  • Nimble execution and off-market sourcing
  • Hiring talented people and providing them the freedom to execute
  • A highly collaborative culture

Responsibilities:
  • Support comprehensive diligence and developing recommendations on co-investment opportunities. Responsibilities include analyzing companies and sectors, understanding critical value creation levers, and modeling potential outcomes.
  • Support comprehensive diligence and developing recommendations on fund investment opportunities. Responsibilities include evaluating prior performance, reference checks, examining underlying portfolio investments, and modeling fund performance.
  • Effectively screen new opportunities, identifying and succinctly communicating the most relevant investment highlights and key risk considerations.
  • Assist with Impact evaluation and measurement. This role will perform impact diligence in parallel with financial diligence and be expected to make thoughtful recommendations on ways in which to increase and maximize the impact of investments.
  • Managing and monitoring current portfolio investments and preparing portfolio progress reports.
  • Assisting with overall management of the portfolio.

Qualifications
  • Strong academic record from a competitive institution
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience (Investment Banking, Private Equity, etc.)
  • Analytical and critical thinking - Ability to identify and articulate key investment considerations and risks, with a special interest in impact
  • Good interpersonal & team skills - Comfortable with consensus decision-making and working in a collaborative, team-based environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in order to interact with internal and external investment professionals and executives
  • Strong presentation skills - the ability to articulate an investment recommendation or industry thesis in a concise, organized manner
