What is an actuary internship?

An actuary internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the actuarial field. Interns typically work under the supervision of professional actuaries, assisting with data analysis, risk assessment, and financial modeling tasks. This hands-on training helps interns develop technical skills, understand real-world business applications, and prepare for a future career as an actuary. Actuary internships are commonly found in insurance companies, consulting firms, and financial institutions.

What are the qualifications to get an actuary internship?

The qualifications needed to get an actuary internship include mathematical skills and enrollment in a relevant bachelor’s or master's degree program. Companies that hire interns prefer candidates who are pursuing a degree in finance, math, statistics, economics, or another subject with a quantitative focus. Interested students should focus on their studies and ensure they achieve high grades in their classes, especially in math, and have a basic understanding of an actuarial career. These actuary internship programs are usually only open to juniors and seniors in college who plan to pursue a career as an actuary, though there are some internship programs for postgraduate students who are currently studying actuarial sciences.

What types of projects or assignments can I expect during an actuary internship?

As an Actuary Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that support senior actuaries and other team members. Common assignments include assisting with data analysis, building and updating actuarial models, preparing reports, and helping with risk assessments for insurance products or pension plans. Interns often collaborate closely with both actuarial and finance departments, gaining exposure to cross-functional teamwork. These real-world projects not only provide valuable hands-on experience but also help interns develop technical and communication skills essential for future roles in the field.
