Job description

This newly created Actuarial Associate position will contribute to a team that holds responsibility for measuring and analyzing credit-spread risk, with a particular focus on the SA bond fund, and a deep understanding of the key drivers behind that risk. The team's core mandate is to continuously enhance our firm's credit and interest-rate risk measurement framework, advancing analytics, refining methodologies and creating clearer, more intuitive tools to interpret risk. This position will primarily contribute to recurring analyses and assignments with direction from senior team members.
The incumbent will participate in our Actuarial Student Program, a key aspect of which is the pursuit and successful completion of SOA actuarial exams.
Principle Responsibilities:
  • Focus on key rate interest rate sensitivities of variable annuities and fixed income instruments
  • Support the review of key rate interest rate sensitivities
  • Develop an understanding of the underlying sensitivity calculations
  • Apply actuarial techniques and knowledge to perform day-to-day work
  • Work assigned may include, gathering data / inputs, producing calculations, summarization / communication / presentation of results to senior team members or to a broader team, and preparation of documentation
  • May include communication both within and outside of Venerable such as with auditors, actuarial outsourcing partners or other vendors

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance or related business discipline
  • Completion of 0-4 Actuarial Exams or participation in 1 or more Actuarial Internships; 1-3 years finance, insurance industry, or actuarial experience
  • Strong skills in 1 or more of the following: Excel spreadsheets, databases, actuarial projection/valuation software, programming (e.g. R, VBA, SQL)
  • Basic understanding of insurance products and operations
  • Familiarity with interest rates preferred
  • Uses existing procedures and basic problem-solving skills to solve standard problems; analyzes information and standard practices to make informed decisions
  • Leverages strong oral and written communication skills to readily and effectively collaborate with peers, managers, shares information and asks questions
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong desire to learn and grow, detail oriented, be able to deliver reliable results; willing to rotate to other actuarial roles
