Position Summary

We are seeking a Meter Service Mechanic HELPER - Electric to perform routine field work while developing the skills necessary to install, test, maintain, and repair electric metering systems. This position involves hands-on electrical work, customer service interaction, and participation in storm response and emergency restoration activities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid, clean motor vehicle operator's license
  • Ability to successfully pass the CAST test
  • Mechanical aptitude/understanding of and ability to apply electrical theory
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed electrician or equivalent education and experience
  • Prior related metering or instrumentation experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • This position is part of a four-year job progression: Starting pay at Step 1 $32.65 and progressing in accordance with the union contract.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine service work including meter disconnects and reconnects
  • Install, remove, exchange, and perform disconnect/reconnect of meters on single-phase and three-phase systems
  • Perform field testing of electric meters and associated equipment to ensure accuracy and proper operation
  • Execute single-phase and three-phase work orders in the field
  • Assist with installation, testing, removal, repair, and maintenance of electric meters
  • Unload, load, sort, store, and take inventory of meters, metering transformers, equipment, and other related devices
  • Safely operate tools, equipment, and company vehicles in the field
  • Perform assigned work in a safe manner always using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Learn and apply company procedures, standard work methods, and safety protocols
  • Respond to storm duty assignments and emergency restoration efforts as required
  • Assist other qualified personnel as required to support operations and work completion
  • Perform work in accordance with Company standard work method procedures
  • Perform work in a clean, neat, and dependable manner on customer, company, or public property, exercising care to prevent damage and the creation of hazards
  • Maintain accurate time and material records, including meter orders, test orders, service orders, and other required accounting documentation

  • Work is typically performed under close supervision while assisting experienced personnel; selected candidate may also work independently when supervision is near the work being performed
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in a safety-sensitive environment
  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical aptitude required for successful job performance
  • Ability to work irregular and/or extended hours as required, including storm response and emergency restoration efforts
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments
  • Demonstrates cooperative and professional relationships with co-workers, customers, and the public
  • Maintains a neat personal appearance and exhibits behavior that reflects favorably on the Company

  • Visual requirements include near vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed inspection and testing tasks

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with regular exposure to varying and adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, precipitation, and wind. The position may involve exposure to energized electrical equipment and requires strict adherence to safety procedures.

The typical noise level is moderate; however, exposure to higher noise levels may occur during certain field operations, requiring appropriate PPE.
