What is an Active Motif?

An active motif refers to a specific sequence or structural element in a molecule, such as DNA, RNA, or protein, that is responsible for its biological activity or function. In molecular biology, active motifs are critical for processes like gene regulation, protein binding, and enzyme catalysis. Understanding active motifs helps scientists identify functional regions within larger biomolecules and develop targeted therapies or research tools.

What are some common challenges faced by researchers working at Active Motif, and how can they be addressed?

Researchers at Active Motif often work on complex epigenetics and chromatin biology projects that require staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving technologies and methodologies. One common challenge is managing multiple projects with tight deadlines while ensuring high-quality experimental results. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, such as bioinformatics and product development, and maintaining clear communication can help overcome these challenges. Continuous learning and professional development are also encouraged to keep pace with advancements in the field.

What is the difference between Active Motif vs Chromatographer?

AspectActive MotifChromatographer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field; experience with protein and DNA assaysBachelor's or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related; training in chromatography techniques
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focused on epigenetics, molecular biology, and protein researchAnalytical labs, research facilities, or manufacturing settings involving chemical separation
Employer & Industry UsageBiotech companies, research institutions, and laboratories specializing in epigenetics and molecular biologyPharmaceutical, biotech, and chemical industries performing chemical analysis and purification

Active Motif and Chromatographer roles share some laboratory skills but differ mainly in focus. Active Motif specializes in epigenetics and molecular biology techniques, while Chromatographers focus on chemical separation and analysis. Both roles require laboratory experience, but their specific expertise and industry applications vary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Research Scientist at Active Motif, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research Scientist at Active Motif, you need a solid background in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related life sciences, typically supported by a relevant advanced degree. Familiarity with laboratory techniques such as ChIP, qPCR, NGS, and experience using scientific analysis software are essential. Job description

What is Motif?

Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator to treat people with mental health disorders.

We are an early-stage startup with funding from venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.

Motif's technology stack consists of a small implant that is wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter, configured and controlled from a programming interface. It delivers novel stimulation therapy to cortical targets and will evolve to record biomarkers of symptoms, disease state, and therapy response.

Where are we going?

We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology.

About the Job

We are seeking a cross-functional strategic leader to oversee clinical evidence generation and external research partnerships. If you have a passion for translating early-stage neurotechnology into therapies that reach patients, apply now to be part of our dedicated team. Lead the clinical roadmap from early feasibility through reimbursement while shaping the scientific narrative for a new class of psychiatric therapy.

Job Location: Remote with occasional visits to Motif Headquarters in Houston, Texas

Does this sound like you?

  • Do you believe openness and honesty are key to team success?
  • Do you enjoy learning and are curious about how and why things work?
  • Do you like challenging the conventional way of doing things to find efficiencies and new ways of working?

If yes to the above, then come work with Motif! We are highly dedicated people with a passion for neurotechnology, clinical product development, and putting the patient first. We are looking for people with the same energy who will thrive in a high growth - high autonomy environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and own the clinical roadmap
    • Define the end-to-end evidence generation strategy from early feasibility studies through to successful reimbursement decisions
    • Integrate regulatory and reimbursement requirements into study design to ensure clinical data supports both approval and coverage
    • Partner with leadership to align the clinical roadmap with company strategy, financing milestones, and product development timelines
  • Oversee clinical development projects and grants
    • Provide oversight of active clinical studies, ensuring programs are delivered on time, on budget, and to protocol
    • Identify, secure, and manage non-dilutive funding sources, including federal grants and foundation support for evidence development (clinical and preclinical) programs
    • Oversee grant-funded programs end-to-end, including reporting, milestone tracking, and renewals
  • Represent the company externally and build the scientific community
    • Represent the company at scientific and medical meetings, presenting data and shaping the clinical narrative for our platform
    • Build and maintain peer-level relationships with key opinion leaders in psychiatry, neuromodulation, and related fields
    • Establish and manage external research partnerships with academic investigators and clinical collaborators
  • This is not an exhaustive list of duties and you may be asked to perform different tasks if your role within or the objectives of the organization changes.

To be considered, you will need:

  • 10+ years of experience in clinical development within the medical device, pharmaceutical, or biotech industry, with progressive leadership responsibility
  • Demonstrated experience leading clinical studies from protocol design through execution, including at least one study that supported a regulatory submission or market approval
  • Experience directly managing clinical, scientific, or medical affairs teams, and a track record of representing an organization at scientific meetings
  • To be able to travel to Houston, TX for onsite meetings (approximately ~4-5 times per year) and to other scientific conferences and/or clinical meetings

It is a bonus if you have:

  • Experience in active implantable medical devices, neuromodulation, or neurostimulation therapies
  • Clinical or research background in psychiatry, depression, or related mental health indications
