Position Title:            Field Canvasser (Seasonal)

Reports To:                 Managing Director, Latino Network Action Fund

Classification:            Temporary, .25 FTE

                                       Start Date: August 3rd - End date: November 6th

Compensation:          $27/hour, non-exempt, 12 - 16 hrs a week

Location:                     Hybrid/Portland, OR/Gresham, OR/Troutdale, OR



ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

Latino Network's mission is: Leading with love, we cultivate our staff and community as a powerful force for radical social change. We do this through Latino community-driven programs, advocacy, and service. Our work springs from the core belief in Latino community self-determination, that is, the ability of community members to participate meaningfully in the decisions that affect their lives and the lives of their families. We actively partner across a variety of city, county, state, and community organizations to deliver training and support, a wide range of services, as well as influence policy.


CANDIDATE PROFILE:

LNAF seeks a bilingual (English/Spanish) community centered individual with bi-cultural proficiency to do direct voter engagement, voter education, and outreach in East Multnomah County and the City of Portland. 

Canvassers will work both first work doing c3 voter education work in community and then transition into c4 direct candidate work to help elect progressive, values-aligned candidates, if applicable. The top responsibilities include door to door canvassing, phone banking, and helping at community events such as ballot assistance, larger workshop events, and direct voter support.

This is a temporary, part-time position up to 20 hours a week until after the November election. This position requires working long hours, 4-6 hours walking or screen time. Weekend, evening work, and reliable transportation is also required in the duration of this position.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports Managing Director and Lead Organizers in accomplishing outreach, ID, and data collection goals
  • Takes part in phone banks, digital events, textbanks, canvasses
  • Engages people in conversation by going door to door
  • Travel to assigned geographic territory and working in all weather conditions
  • Achieve the daily contact and engagement goals as assigned
  • Attends all mandatory onboarding and other training
  • Works cross-culturally with other organizations to meet overall field goals

Requirements

 SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Related unpaid or paid advocacy, political and organizing experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • English and Spanish Bilingual proficiency required, ability to converse with staff and community members
  • Ability to connect and communicate with interpersonally with various groups of people
  • Ability to build trust within relationships and keep information confidential
  • Must be able to travel to the Latino Network main office, La Plaza Esperanza in Gresham, and canvassing sites across Multnomah County, and other meet up spaces such as coffee shops and public parks
  • Takes initiative and maintains proactive communication
  • Ability to work weekends, late evenings, and flex work schedule as needed
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Not required but preferred knowledge using EveryAction and Voter Action Network (VAN) and campaign software such as ThruTalk, and VPB

This position requires frequent computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
