What are Acting Editors?

An Acting Editor is a professional temporarily filling the role of an editor, often during a transition period or when the primary editor is unavailable. Acting Editors oversee the editorial process, manage submissions, coordinate with writers and other staff, and ensure content meets publication standards. They may also make key decisions about content, deadlines, and editorial direction. Their responsibilities are similar to a permanent editor, but the position is typically interim until a new or returning editor assumes the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acting Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acting Editor, you need strong editorial judgment, exceptional writing and editing skills, and experience in content management, often backed by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), digital publishing platforms, and editing tools like Adobe InCopy or Microsoft Word is typically required. Leadership, time management, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating teams and ensuring deadlines are met. These capabilities are essential to maintain publication quality, guide editorial direction, and ensure smooth workflow during leadership transitions.

How does an Acting Editor balance managing editorial workflows with maintaining content quality under tight deadlines?

As an Acting Editor, you are often responsible for overseeing multiple editorial projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize effectively. Tight deadlines can present challenges, but successful Acting Editors implement structured editorial calendars, delegate tasks appropriately, and maintain open lines of communication with writers, copy editors, and other team members. Regular check-ins and clear feedback help ensure that content maintains high quality standards even in fast-paced environments. This role also involves swiftly adapting to changes and resolving issues as they arise, making flexibility and problem-solving key assets.
