What are some common challenges faced by Acoustics Engineers in project work?

Acoustics Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing optimal sound quality with architectural or budget constraints, meeting strict regulatory standards, and adapting designs to diverse environments. Collaboration with architects, mechanical engineers, and clients is essential to integrate acoustic solutions seamlessly into broader projects. Additionally, staying updated with evolving technology and modeling tools is important for delivering innovative and effective results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Acoustics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acoustics Engineer, a strong background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles—often supported by a degree in acoustical engineering or a related field—is essential. Proficiency with simulation software like MATLAB, EASE, or SoundPLAN, and familiarity with measurement tools and industry standards, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These skills and qualities ensure accurate analysis, innovative solutions, and successful project outcomes in acoustical design and noise control.

What is the difference between Acoustics Engineer vs Audio Engineer?

AspectAcoustics EngineerAudio Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Acoustical Engineering, Physics, or related fieldsBachelor's degree in Audio Engineering, Sound Design, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, construction sites, industrial settings, consulting firmsRecording studios, live event venues, broadcasting companies
Industry UsageConstruction, environmental noise control, product designMusic production, live sound, broadcasting

While both roles involve sound and acoustics, Acoustics Engineers focus on designing and analyzing sound environments, noise control, and environmental acoustics. In contrast, Audio Engineers specialize in recording, mixing, and producing sound for music, film, and broadcasts. The two careers share foundational knowledge but serve different industry needs.

What does an Acoustics Engineer do?

An Acoustics Engineer is responsible for analyzing and controlling sound and vibration in various environments, such as buildings, vehicles, and outdoor spaces. They design solutions to improve sound quality or minimize unwanted noise, working on projects like concert halls, recording studios, or noise barriers along highways. Their work often involves using specialized equipment and computer modeling to predict acoustic performance and recommend improvements. Acoustics Engineers also ensure that designs comply with regulations and client requirements.

TECHLITE, a division of The Zippertubing Company, is a U.S.-owned manufacturer with more than 50 years of experience designing and producing high-performance acoustic panels and specialty insulation systems. We serve architectural, industrial, transportation, and commercial markets where sound control, thermal performance, and material innovation matter.

As a small, agile manufacturing organization, our team works closely across engineering, production, and customer-facing functions to deliver customized, performance-driven solutions. We value curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on problem solving.

TECHLITE is seeking an Acoustics Engineer to support the design, testing, and development of acoustic and insulation products. This role blends acoustic analysis, product development, materials science, and cross-functional collaboration, offering hands-on exposure to engineered-to-order solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and development of acoustic panels and insulation systems
  • Perform acoustic calculations and analysis related to sound absorption, transmission loss, and noise reduction
  • Assist in product testing, validation, and documentation
  • Interpret customer specifications and technical requirements
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, scalable, and cost-effective
  • Support prototype development and product improvement initiatives
  • Work with Sales and Business Development to help translate technical performance into customer-ready solutions
  • Contribute to technical documentation, reports, and product data sheets
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within engineering and production

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in acoustics, materials engineering, or product development
  • Foundational understanding of:
    • Sound absorption and transmission principles
    • Acoustic measurement concepts (NRC, STC, etc.)
    • Materials behavior and performance
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with CAD software preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small-team manufacturing environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred (But Not Required)

  • Internship experience in architectural acoustics, manufacturing, or materials testing
  • Exposure to ASTM acoustic testing standards
  • Experience working in a production or lab environment

While performing the duties of this job, the Acoustics Engineer will perform most of the work in a multi-occupied office environment, with face-to-face customer interactions, and some work is performed on the production floor, near vibrating loud equipment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. At times the employee may be exposed to airborne particulates, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations on the production floor. The noise level can be loud at times.

This role is partially sedentary; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a step ladder as necessary during their shift. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The position involves sitting, talking, hearing, climbing stairs, using the elevator, and walking throughout the 8-10-hour shift. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools, drafting instruments, computers, printers, and various equipment.

This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. This individual will also be responsible for all other duties assigned by the department manager or executive management. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice. This classification for this role is exempt.
