What is the difference between Acoustic Simulation vs Acoustic Engineer?

AspectAcoustic SimulationAcoustic Engineer
Required CredentialsDegree in acoustics, engineering, or related field; software proficiencyDegree in acoustics, engineering, or related field; certifications may enhance prospects
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, using simulation softwareVaries; labs, construction sites, or offices depending on projects
Industry UsageUsed in design, research, and development to model sound behaviorApplied in designing, testing, and implementing acoustic solutions

While Acoustic Simulation focuses on modeling sound behavior through software, Acoustic Engineers apply these principles in real-world settings to solve acoustic problems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but their daily tasks differ—one is more software-centric, the other more hands-on in physical environments.

Job description

At Apple, new ideas have a way of quickly becoming extraordinary products, services and customer experiences. Sound is an essential and compelling facet of the customer experience. Apple has assembled a world-class Acoustics team that enables our customers to experience music with delight, communicate with clarity and appreciate our products without disturbance from noise. In Apple Acoustics we work with obsessive attention to detail, directly contributing to products that ship to millions of people around the world.
The Audio Product Acoustics team is responsible for the acoustic design and overall audio quality of the entire AirPods lineup. We are a diverse team having expertise in acoustic design and integration, hardware and algorithm prototyping, critical listening, and hearing science. We work closely with multi-functional teams to find innovative solutions to complex engineering issues. We are searching for an Acoustic Engineer to help bring AirPods to the next level.
Description
As an Acoustic Engineer on the Audio Products Team, you will be responsible for taking new and innovative audio concepts from the early design phase all the way to a mass produced audio product heard by our customers. This includes giving input on the mechanical and electrical design to the industrial and product design teams. As a natural part of simulating, building, and validating acoustic designs, we also give input on the digital signal processing to ensure the overall audio product experience is second to none. Limited international travel to support engineering activities required.
Preferred Qualifications
A strong passion for audio and a fundamental knowledge of acoustic theory with a focus on electroacoustics, physical acoustics, and acoustic simulation
Practical understanding of acoustic transducers and equivalent circuit modeling techniques in the context of headphone design
Experience with integration of speakers and microphones, including designing for water and chemical resistance
Proficiency with acoustic simulation tools, acoustic measurement tools and data acquisition, with a proven success in the design, manufacturing and failure analysis of audio systems
Proficiency in high level programming (MATLAB or Python)
Experience modeling acoustic systems with COMSOL Multiphysics or equivalent software packages
Familiarity with 3D CAD preferred
Minimum Qualifications
3+ years in an acoustics engineering role, preferably within the audio consumer electronics industry
BS/MS in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or an equivalent field
Excellent written and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with multi-disciplinary team members
