Primary Purpose:

Serves as a key resource within the Tax Department responsible for preparing state income and franchise tax compliance for Norfolk Southern Corporation and its subsidiaries. The role supports return preparation, apportionment, state modifications, estimated tax payments, tax accruals, account reconciliations, and financial reporting, while also assisting with property tax returns, business licenses, public utility taxes and fees, and other state and local tax obligations.

Principal Duties:

Prepare state income and franchise tax returns, extensions, estimated tax payments, refund claims, and related filings.
Prepare supporting state income tax workpapers, including apportionment calculations, state modifications, taxable income analyses, and tax attribute schedules.
Prepare and file property tax returns and supporting schedules; assist with related reporting requirements and information requests.
Administer business license compliance and public utility taxes and fees, including registrations, renewals, filings, payments, and related reporting requirements.
Prepare, analyze, and reconcile tax-related balance sheet and income statement accounts, including tax payable, receivable, accrual, prepaid, and expense accounts.
Investigate and resolve reconciling items, account variances, payment discrepancies, and other differences affecting tax accounts and financial reporting.
Assist with tax accruals, financial reporting requirements, and documentation supporting tax filings, payments, account balances, and compliance positions.
Analyze financial data and business transactions to determine appropriate state and local tax treatment and identify compliance requirements.
Respond to tax notices and information requests by researching issues, preparing support, and coordinating timely resolution.
Support tax audits by gathering, organizing, and preparing workpapers and documentation needed to respond to Information Document Requests (IDRs) and other audit inquiries.
Conduct tax research, support special projects, and assist with process improvements related to tax compliance, financial reporting, and account reconciliation processes.
