Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:    

The Accounting Specialist is responsible for a variety of accounting tasks including monthly billing for accounts receivable and preparing daily and monthly reports for activities. Assists in various reconciliations and special projects as requested by the Finance Department.                                               

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assists accountants in the reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
  • Assists other professional team members in monthly services and special reports.
  • Research and compiles information for specialized reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of bank reconciliations.
  • Processes financial documents for preparing and posting journal entries.
  • Provides assistance to all areas of the Accounting Services Department, such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, fixed assets, and journal entries, as requested.
  • Generates monthly billings of accounts receivable for the various Tribal entities and distributes to agencies and customers. Tracks and deposits all money received on accounts.
  • Processes vendor payments after obtaining the required supporting documentation and authorization.
  • Performs assigned duties in accordance with the policies and procedures outlined in the Governmental and Accounting team member manuals.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service.

CONTACTS: Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other Departments, executives, Board of Directors, bankers, customers, outside vendor/service providers, Federal, State Tribal, and local governments and agencies, the general public, and Tribal members.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position primarily sedentary. Lifts up to a maximum of 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant typing; frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of hearing, near, midrange, and far vision, driving and occasional carrying, lifting and pushing/pulling of up to 25 pounds; occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, manual handling, use of color and field of vision and bending.  Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather and noise. Potential hazards include constant computer use and typing. 

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Two years’ prior bookkeeping experience is required. Billing experience preferred.

Certification/License: Must comply with the Sault Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have an understanding of the principles of accounting. Must have knowledge of standard office practices and demonstrated working knowledge of basic office equipment including phones, computers, facsimiles, printers and copiers. Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheets, word processing and accounting software, internet and email preferred. Prior knowledge and experience with JD Edwards, Excel, and Word preferred.  Must exhibit dependability, integrity, accuracy, and diligence. Must be able to work with little or no supervision and use good judgment. Must have excellent customer service skills.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and multi-tasking skills required.  Must be able to work in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment and effectively meet deadlines. Must have the ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.   Must be able to effectively interact with people at all levels of the organization. Must maintain strict confidentiality and understand and comply with all organizational and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Must work closely with and adhere to the Privacy Act.  Native American preferred.
