What does an account manager in technology do?

An Account Manager in Technology is responsible for managing relationships with clients who use a company's technology products or services. They serve as the main point of contact for clients, help address their needs, and ensure they are satisfied with the solutions provided. Account Managers in this field work to grow their accounts by identifying new business opportunities and coordinating with internal teams such as sales, support, and product development. They must have a strong understanding of both the technology being offered and the client's business goals, ensuring that solutions are tailored effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account manager in technology?

To thrive as a Technology Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, technical understanding of IT solutions, and a background in business or related fields, often supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, basic knowledge of cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) are highly valued. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you manage client expectations and drive satisfaction. These skills are crucial for bridging the gap between client needs and technical solutions, ensuring long-term account growth and customer retention.

What are some common challenges account managers in technology face, and how can they overcome them?

Account Managers in the technology sector often navigate rapidly changing products and solutions, which can make it challenging to stay informed and provide clients with up-to-date recommendations. Additionally, aligning client needs with technical capabilities requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. To overcome these challenges, successful Account Managers regularly participate in product training, foster close collaboration with technical teams, and proactively communicate with clients to anticipate and address issues before they escalate.

Job description

Job Title: National Account Manager - Technology

Location:  Remote with significant travel

Division: Revenue

Department: Business Development

Base Salary Range: $190,000 - $200,00

About Us:

Quantum Computing Inc. (QCi) (Nasdaq: QUBT) is an innovative, integrated photonics company that provides accessible and affordable quantum machines to the world today. QCi products are designed to operate at room temperature and low power at an affordable cost. The Company’s portfolio of core technology and products offer unique capabilities in the areas of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security as well as remote sensing applications.

Scope of the Job:

We are hiring a senior National Account Manager (NAM) to own and grow our most strategic Technology-industry accounts — hyperscalers and cloud providers, semiconductor and hardware manufacturers, software and SaaS companies, AI/ML firms, and data-center and systems-integration companies. This is a high-impact, quota-carrying role for a seasoned enterprise seller who has spent a career opening doors at the largest global technology companies and translating complex, emerging technology into board-level business value.

You will operate at the intersection of frontier photonics and the infrastructure that powers modern computing, selling a portfolio that includes both advanced software/subscription offerings and enterprise-grade quantum and photonic hardware — including photonic chips from our own foundry. Success in this role requires equal fluency in the language of the engineering organization, the CTO's roadmap, and the infrastructure and security teams — and the credibility to earn multi-year commitments from CTOs, CIOs, Chief AI Officers, CISOs, Heads of Infrastructure and R&D, and procurement at the world's leading technology companies.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Own strategic technology accounts. Take full ownership of a portfolio of named, large global technology accounts — building and executing account plans that grow QCI's footprint, revenue, and multi-year commitments.
  • Sell the full portfolio. Position and close both software/subscription solutions and enterprise-wide hardware deployments, constructing solutions that combine quantum optimization, photonic ML, photonic chips, and quantum-secure offerings to the client's business problem.
  • Engage the C-suite. Develop and sustain executive relationships across engineering, infrastructure, AI, security, and procurement functions, and serve as the trusted advisor who connects QCI capabilities to measurable performance, cost, and security outcomes.
  • Lead complex, long-cycle deals. Orchestrate multi-stakeholder, multi-quarter enterprise sales cycles — navigating proofs of concept, technical evaluations and benchmarks, security reviews, legal, and procurement — from qualification through signature.
  • Quarterback the deal team. Marshal solutions engineers, product, research, legal, and executive sponsors to advance opportunities, tailoring the message to each stakeholder without losing the through-line to business value.
  • Build durable pipeline. Prospect and develop new opportunities within existing global accounts while maintaining a rigorous, accurately-forecasted pipeline in the CRM.
  • Own the number. Consistently meet and exceed quarterly and annual revenue targets, and provide clear, disciplined forecasting to leadership.
  • Be the voice of the market. Bring competitive intelligence and client requirements back to product and research teams to shape QCI's technology-sector roadmap.
  • Negotiate enterprise agreements. Structure and close complex commercial agreements — subscriptions, licenses, hardware and chip-supply purchases, and multi-year enterprise contracts — that balance client value with QCI's growth objectives.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of enterprise sales experience selling into large, global technology organizations (hyperscalers/cloud providers, semiconductor and hardware manufacturers, software/SaaS companies, or major systems integrators).
  • Proven experience selling BOTH enterprise software (or SaaS/subscription solutions) AND enterprise-wide hardware into large global technology organizations — with a demonstrable track record of closing deals in each category.
  • Consistent, quantifiable overachievement against large enterprise quotas, including complex six- and seven-figure (or larger) transactions.
  • Deep executive network and access within global technology companies, and a demonstrated ability to open and expand relationships at the C-suite and senior-VP level.
  • Command of long, complex sales cycles involving multiple stakeholders, formal procurement, technical benchmarking, security assessment, and rigorous evaluation by highly technical buyers.
  • Business-value selling. The ability to translate advanced, technically sophisticated products into clear ROI and outcomes that resonate with technology executives and engineering leaders.
  • Rigorous pipeline and forecast discipline, with fluency in a modern CRM and a recognized sales methodology (e.g., MEDDIC, Challenger, Miller Heiman, or similar).
  • Willingness to travel as needed to client sites across major global technology hubs.

Additional Preferred Skills:

  • Domain knowledge of technology workloads such as AI/ML training and inference, high-performance computing, data-center infrastructure and optical interconnects, semiconductor design/manufacturing, or post-quantum / cryptographic security.
  • Experience selling emerging or frontier technology — quantum computing, photonics/optical, AI/ML hardware and accelerators, HPC, or specialized silicon — into sophisticated, deeply technical buyers.
  • Familiarity with the technology ecosystem including cloud and data-center economics, chip supply and foundry relationships, developer and platform buying dynamics, and technical procurement/certification processes.
  • Established relationships within engineering, infrastructure, AI, or CISO organizations at global technology companies.
  • Bachelor's degree in a business, engineering, computer science, or quantitative field; advanced degree a plus.

What Success Looks Like:

Within your first year you will have mapped and prioritized your named accounts, established or deepened executive relationships across each, built a qualified multi-product pipeline, and closed foundational deals that position QCI as a strategic technology partner — not a science project — inside the world's leading travel and hospitality organizations.

Compensation & Benefits:

Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission, equity participation, and a comprehensive benefits package. [Insert specific base/OTE range, equity, and benefits details per current compensation bands.]
