What does an account manager in technology do?

An Account Manager in Technology is responsible for managing relationships with clients who use a company's technology products or services. They serve as the main point of contact for clients, help address their needs, and ensure they are satisfied with the solutions provided. Account Managers in this field work to grow their accounts by identifying new business opportunities and coordinating with internal teams such as sales, support, and product development. They must have a strong understanding of both the technology being offered and the client's business goals, ensuring that solutions are tailored effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account manager in technology?

To thrive as a Technology Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, technical understanding of IT solutions, and a background in business or related fields, often supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, basic knowledge of cloud platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) are highly valued. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help you manage client expectations and drive satisfaction. These skills are crucial for bridging the gap between client needs and technical solutions, ensuring long-term account growth and customer retention.

What are some common challenges account managers in technology face, and how can they overcome them?

Account Managers in the technology sector often navigate rapidly changing products and solutions, which can make it challenging to stay informed and provide clients with up-to-date recommendations. Additionally, aligning client needs with technical capabilities requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. To overcome these challenges, successful Account Managers regularly participate in product training, foster close collaboration with technical teams, and proactively communicate with clients to anticipate and address issues before they escalate.

Job description

Are you our "TYPE"?

Named "One of the Most Innovative Companies in Design'' by Fast Company, Monotype brings brands to life through type and technology that consumers engage with every day. The company's rich legacy includes a library that can be traced back hundreds of years, featuring famed typefaces like Helvetica, Futura, Times New Roman and more. Monotype specializes in the design, development, licensing, and management of typefaces and font technologies for the world's biggest global brands and individual creative professionals, offering a wide set of solutions that make it easier for them to do what they do best: design beautiful brand experiences.

Want to learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can become part of our team of over 1,000 talented employees across the globe? Visit us at www.monotype.com.

Monotype is seeking a driven and results-oriented Account Manager to join our growing Americas Sales team. In this role, you'll own a portfolio of existing enterprise clients-building deep relationships, driving adoption, and identifying new revenue opportunities that help brands unlock the full potential of Monotype's creative and technology solutions. We're looking for a self-starter with strong business acumen, a passion for helping clients succeed, and a track record of growing accounts through consultative selling. You'll have the autonomy to lead strategic conversations, identify opportunities for expansion, and deliver measurable results within some of the world's most recognized brands.

What you'll be doing:

  • Own and grow a portfolio of existing enterprise accounts, achieving and exceeding retention and expansion targets of 90%+.
  • Develop and execute strategic account plans to uncover opportunities, increase adoption, and drive revenue growth.
  • Identify, qualify, and close upsell and cross-sell opportunities by understanding client challenges and aligning Monotype's solutions to their business objectives.
  • Act as a trusted partner and advisor-building credibility through product expertise, industry insight, and a consultative approach.
  • Lead client conversations end-to-end, including renewals, negotiations, and expansion discussions across key business functions.
  • Collaborate closely with marketing, product, and customer support teams to ensure seamless delivery and maximum client value.
  • Track performance and pipeline through CRM tools, maintaining accurate forecasting and data-driven decision-making.
  • Stay informed on market trends and competitive activity to proactively position Monotype's solutions and identify whitespace opportunities.
  • Represent the voice of the customer internally, sharing insights that drive product innovation and go-to-market strategies.

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
  • 4-7 years' proven experience in account management, sales, or customer growth within SaaS, digital media, or technology environments.
  • A hunter mentality within a farmer role-you're as passionate about nurturing relationships as you are about driving new revenue.
  • Demonstrated success in meeting or (preferably) exceeding sales and retention goals.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage senior-level decision-makers across creative, marketing, and procurement teams.
  • A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset with exceptional organization and follow-through.
  • Strong abilities in prospecting, planning, and implementing Account and Territory Management strategies.
  • Passion for creativity, technology, and helping brands make an impact through design and innovation.
  • Understanding of CRM technology required, experience with Salesforce is preferred.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 25% annually

What's in it for you:

  • Extensive development and training offerings.
  • Highly engaged Events Committee to keep work enjoyable.
  • Competitive Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage to meet all your healthcare needs.
  • Flexible work arrangements and unlimited vacation and sick time.
  • Generous 401k match to save for your future, and so much more!

The US pay range for this position is $90,000 - $120,000 annual base salary. Commissions will also be offered as part of this direct-sales role. The final annual base salary offered will be based on location and experience level, and may be less for internal candidates depending upon experience.

Monotype is an Equal Opportunities Employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or protected veteran status.
