What is an accessibility strategist?

An Accessibility Strategist is a professional who develops and implements strategies to ensure that digital products, services, or environments are accessible to people with disabilities. They work with organizations to assess current accessibility practices, recommend improvements, and help teams comply with legal standards like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Accessibility Strategists often collaborate with designers, developers, and stakeholders to create inclusive experiences for all users. Their role is crucial in promoting digital inclusion and preventing barriers that might exclude individuals with disabilities.

How does an accessibility strategist typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of digital products?

Accessibility Strategists work closely with designers, developers, product managers, and quality assurance teams to ensure that digital products are inclusive from the ground up. They often participate in project planning meetings, review design prototypes for accessibility considerations, and provide guidance on implementing accessible code. Additionally, they may conduct training sessions or workshops to build awareness and skills across teams, ensuring that accessibility standards are integrated seamlessly into the workflow. Regular communication and collaboration are key to addressing challenges and achieving compliance with accessibility guidelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accessibility strategist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Strategist, you need deep knowledge of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), digital design principles, and relevant laws like the ADA, often supported by experience in UX/UI or web development. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility testing tools (like Axe or WAVE), and certifications such as IAAP CPACC or WAS are highly valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and advocacy skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and effectively champion inclusive design. These skills ensure digital products are usable for everyone, reduce legal risk, and support organizational commitment to diversity and inclusion.
