Accessibility Software information

What is accessibility software?

Accessibility software refers to computer programs and tools designed to help people with disabilities use digital devices and access digital content. These tools can include screen readers for the visually impaired, speech recognition software, magnifiers, and alternative input devices for those with mobility challenges. Accessibility software ensures that websites, applications, and documents are usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities. It plays a crucial role in creating an inclusive digital environment and complying with legal standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

How does an Accessibility Software Engineer typically collaborate with designers and product managers to ensure digital accessibility?

Accessibility Software Engineers work closely with designers and product managers during the early stages of product development to identify potential accessibility barriers and propose inclusive solutions. They often participate in design reviews, contribute to accessibility documentation, and provide guidance on complying with standards like WCAG. Regular communication and collaboration are key, as engineers help translate accessibility requirements into technical specifications and verify that implemented features are usable for people with disabilities. By fostering a team-wide commitment to accessibility, they help create more inclusive digital experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of web development, accessibility standards (like WCAG), and experience in inclusive design, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with assistive technologies, automated accessibility testing tools, and platforms such as ARIA, screen readers, and accessibility auditing software is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and advocating for accessible solutions. These qualifications ensure digital products are usable by everyone, meeting legal standards and promoting inclusivity.

What is the difference between Accessibility Software vs Accessibility Tester?

Required SkillsProgramming, software development, understanding of accessibility standardsTesting methodologies, knowledge of accessibility guidelines, attention to detail
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, tech companies, assistive technology firmsQuality assurance teams, testing labs, tech companies

Accessibility Software focuses on creating and maintaining tools that enhance accessibility, while Accessibility Testers evaluate existing software to ensure it meets accessibility standards. Both roles are essential in making technology inclusive, often working closely within the same industry and environment.

Job description

Job Summary

Provide expert-level design and development expertise across the full stack: front-end, back-end, APIs, databases, and integrations. Create and maintain software products including applications, web pages, client portals, reports and queries, and other products as requested. Leverage modern AI-assisted and agentic development tools to accelerate delivery, while bringing the engineering depth to review, validate, and stand behind everything that ships, whether written by a person or generated by AI. Interface with clients, customers, and internal users to gather requirements, troubleshoot issues, and deploy solutions. Train other team members and provide technical leadership in design and development matters. Help develop and support software development best practices. This role operates on a hybrid work model.

Major Responsibilities
  • Design and develop scalable, reusable, secure, and maintainable software solutions.
  • Lead the implementation of complex features and resolve high-impact technical issues.
  • Define and enforce coding standards, best practices, and design principles.
  • Optimize system performance and scalability through code and architecture improvements.
  • Work closely with product managers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to technical decision-making.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including QA and UX/UI.
  • Guide and mentor junior and mid-level developers through technical challenges.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
  • Leverage agentic AI development tools (e.g., Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, etc.) to design, build, and refactor software, and rigorously review and validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability.
  • Share knowledge and promote continuous learning within the team.
  • Take ownership of technical aspects of projects, ensuring timely and successful delivery.
  • Break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable components for the team.
  • Identify risks and propose solutions to mitigate them during project planning.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends.
  • Propose and implement innovative solutions to improve processes, tools, and overall codebase quality.
  • Promote the adoption of new tools, frameworks, or methodologies to enhance development efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
  • Strong back-end development expertise in C# (.NET / ASP.NET Core) and Python (e.g., FastAPI, Django), with the ability to design and build robust, secure APIs and services. Equivalent depth in another modern back-end stack will also be considered.
  • Solid understanding of database and data-layer design, including relational databases, data modeling, and writing efficient, well-structured queries.
  • Proficiency with a modern JavaScript/TypeScript front-end framework (such as React, Next.js, Angular, or Vue), including component architecture, state management, routing, server-side rendering, and data fetching and caching patterns.
  • Skilled at building responsive, accessible UI from design specifications (e.g., Figma), with strong attention to cross-device compatibility, performance, and usability.
  • Experienced in full-stack architecture and design—structuring code and data flow and building scalable, reusable, and maintainable systems end to end.

  • Strong experience with cloud-based deployment and integration across Azure, AWS, and/or Google Cloud, including CI/CD pipeline implementation and environment configuration.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted and agentic development tools (e.g., Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, etc.) in a daily workflow, paired with the engineering depth to critically review, test, and validate AI-generated code rather than accepting it at face value.
  • Provided technical mentorship to mid- and junior-level developers, fostering growth through guidance, feedback, and collaborative development practices.
  • Version Control: Expertise with Git and branching strategies.
  • Testing: Proficient in unit, integration, and end-to-end testing and modern testing frameworks.
  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects.
  • Experience leading teams or managing technical projects.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience, including relevant boot camps and industry certifications).
Physical Requirements/Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to multi-task technical problems efficiently.
  • Frequent computer use.
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Concentrating for long periods of time.
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Able to effectively estimate and manage time
