What are Accessibility QA Testers?

Accessibility QA Testers are professionals who evaluate digital products, such as websites and applications, to ensure they are usable by people with disabilities. They check that these platforms comply with accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Their work includes testing with assistive technologies, reporting issues, and helping teams improve accessibility. Accessibility QA Testers play a crucial role in making digital experiences inclusive for everyone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility QA Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility QA Tester, you need a solid understanding of web accessibility standards (such as WCAG), manual and automated testing skills, and experience in quality assurance processes. Familiarity with tools like Axe, JAWS, NVDA, and browser developer tools, as well as knowledge of HTML, CSS, and ARIA, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help testers identify and report accessibility issues clearly. These skills ensure digital products are usable by people with disabilities, supporting legal compliance and inclusive design.

How does an Accessibility QA Tester typically collaborate with developers and designers during the product development lifecycle?

As an Accessibility QA Tester, you play a key role in ensuring that digital products are usable by people with disabilities. You will regularly collaborate with developers to review code for accessibility compliance and provide actionable feedback on issues found during testing. You’ll also work closely with designers to review wireframes or prototypes, helping to catch potential accessibility barriers early in the process. This collaborative approach not only improves product quality but also fosters a shared responsibility for accessibility within the team.
