They focus on designing interfaces, content, and experiences that accommodate a wide range of needs, such as visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive differences. Their work often involves collaborating with developers, UX/UI designers, and stakeholders to implement accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). By prioritizing accessibility, they help create inclusive products that provide equal access and usability for everyone.

How does an Accessibility Designer typically collaborate with developers and product teams during a project?

Accessibility Designers work closely with developers and product teams throughout the design and development lifecycle. They provide guidelines, review design prototypes for accessibility compliance, and offer feedback to ensure inclusive user experiences. Regular meetings and collaborative workshops are common, allowing Accessibility Designers to address potential barriers early and suggest practical solutions. This role often involves advocating for accessibility best practices and educating team members on emerging standards and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessibility Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessibility Designer, you need expertise in inclusive design principles, a solid understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), and experience with web or app development. Familiarity with accessibility testing tools, screen readers, and certifications like CPACC or WAS are often required. Overview

Join Esri's Product Design team as a Senior Product Designer focused on the Web GIS SDK. In this role, you'll help shape cohesive, scalable maps and application components used across the web platform, partnering closely with Product Engineers, Developers, and cross-functional teams.

You'll design thoughtful, production-ready web components and reusable patterns that improve usability, accessibility, and visual consistency across ArcGIS products. Your work will directly support developers and teams building polished, trusted experiences while helping strengthen the long-term design quality of Esri's platform.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver reusable Web GIS SDK components that balance customer needs, platform standards, and long-term scalability
  • Contribute to the visual and interaction quality of shared components, ensuring they feel cohesive, modern, and professionally designed across Esri applications
  • Partner with Product Engineers, Developers, cross-functional teams, senior designers, and design system partners to shape component behavior, interaction patterns, and visual design
  • Create high-fidelity design specifications, including component states, motion, accessibility requirements, and usage guidance
  • Contribute to a cohesive, modern design system by refining reusable patterns, applying established design system standards, and identifying opportunities to improve component usability, clarity, and consistency across Esri applications
  • Advocate for accessibility, usability, and inclusive design through research, testing, and WCAG 2.1 / Section 508 best practices
  • Clearly communicate design intent, decisions, and tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders, supporting adoption through documentation, demos, and close collaboration with engineering

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing complex, enterprise-grade web applications or design systems, preferably in SaaS or GIS-related domains
  • Portfolio demonstrating component-based design, systems thinking, and attention to visual and interaction detail
  • Experience designing for scalability and reuse
  • Proficiency in Figma and component-based design workflows
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 / Section 508)
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience partnering closely with engineers
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions effectively
  • Bachelor's degree in design, HCI, or a related field
