Access Control information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Access Control Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Access Control Specialist, you need a solid understanding of security protocols, electronic access systems, and often a background in physical security or IT, sometimes supported by certifications like CompTIA Security+ or ASIS CPP. Familiarity with access control management software (such as Lenel or HID), badge systems, and surveillance integration is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help professionals respond effectively to security incidents and coordinate with various stakeholders. These skills are essential to ensure the safety of personnel and assets by maintaining secure environments and quickly addressing potential breaches.

What is the difference between Access Control vs Security Guard?

Common Search & ComparisonAccess control systems, security accessSecurity guard duties, security personnel

Access Control focuses on managing and restricting entry through systems and credentials, often in IT or physical security settings. Security Guards provide physical security through patrols and monitoring. Both roles are essential for safety but differ in responsibilities and work environments.

What is access control?

Access control refers to the methods and policies used to regulate who can enter or use resources within a building, facility, or computer system. In physical security, access control involves mechanisms like key cards, biometric scanners, or security personnel to ensure only authorized individuals gain entry. In information technology, it involves controlling permissions and user rights to files, networks, and applications. Effective access control helps prevent unauthorized access and protects valuable assets or sensitive information.

What are some common challenges faced by Access Control professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Access Control professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing security protocols with convenient access for authorized personnel, managing rapidly evolving technology, and staying compliant with changing regulations. To address these, it’s essential to maintain open communication with stakeholders, continually update knowledge on new systems, and implement thorough training for all users. Proactive maintenance and regular audits can also help prevent potential breaches and ensure smooth operations.

US Export Control Officer

The Exploration Company

Houston, TX • On-site

Full-time

Posted 3 days ago

Job description

Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

We are looking for a US Export Control Officer to own the day-to-day execution of U.S. export controls at TEC US LLC. In this role, you will make clear, practical, and well-documented decisions on the handling of controlled hardware, software, and technical data, while helping teams move quickly without creating compliance risk.

You will work at the intersection of engineering, digital tools, procurement, legal, and operations. You will lead U.S. export-control execution for TEC US LLC, partner closely with the other Export Control Officers on cross-jurisdiction matters, and build the discipline, records, and training needed to keep the company audit-ready as programs scale.

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for the legally compliant and operationally effective execution of U.S. export controls across TEC US LLC. Day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the U.S. export-control decision owner for controlled events, including first releases, new recipients or countries, access changes, travel access, external collaboration, scope changes, and incidents.

  • Review, validate, or escalate jurisdiction and classification outcomes with technical data owners before external release, expanded internal access, or new collaboration scope is approved.

  • Own U.S. licensing and authorization activity, including applicability analysis, preparation and filing support, conditions tracking, reporting obligations, and coordination with government authorities when needed.

  • Operate the export-control decision workflow in Zendesk with complete required fields, clear legal rationale, and a traceable record of assumptions, approvals, and restrictions.

  • Ensure approved collaboration paths are followed, with SharePoint as the default controlled repository and alternate transfer tools used only where explicitly approved and documented.

  • Enforce handling, marking, and access-control requirements across M365, SharePoint, Teams, DocSend, and related systems, and ensure SpaceVault classification and clearance labeling are completed where required.

  • Review and approve the access model for external personnel, suppliers, and other third parties involved in controlled-data collaboration.

  • Coordinate sanctions, restricted-party, end-use, and end-user escalations with Legal, Procurement, and other relevant functions when screening hits or red flags appear.

  • Maintain complete evidence chains for export-control decisions, including decision records, approvals, screening results, classifications, licenses or exceptions used, and access or activity logs.

  • Run periodic compliance monitoring, including monthly control reviews, reconciliation of approvals against actual access, and follow-up on incidents, exceptions, and corrective actions.

  • Develop, maintain, and improve export-control procedures, standard work, and training material so that requirements are understood and applied consistently across teams.

  • Deliver role-based training and practical guidance to engineering, IT, procurement, HR, quality, and operations stakeholders.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and policy changes affecting U.S. export-control obligations and translate them into actionable internal guidance.

  • Act as a company point of contact with U.S. authorities, customers, and external compliance stakeholders as required, and support management reporting and audit readiness.

  • Issue binding instructions for U.S. export-control scope and stop releases, access, or transfers when the legal basis, authorization, or evidence trail is insufficient.

What We Would Love to See from You:

In the role of US Export Control Officer, ideally you will bring the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, international trade, business, law, or a related discipline; equivalent practical experience is also welcome.

  • 5+ years of hands-on export control, trade compliance, or technology-transfer compliance experience in aerospace, defense, space systems, or another highly regulated technical environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of the EAR and ITAR, including jurisdiction, classification, licensing logic, deemed export and reexport concepts, recordkeeping, and enforcement risk.

  • Experience turning regulatory requirements into practical working rules for technical and operational teams.

  • Ability to operate effectively across Engineering, IT, Procurement, Legal, HR, Quality, and Operations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with disciplined decision documentation and the confidence to challenge unclear or non-compliant requests.

  • Experience with export-control workflows, controlled collaboration environments, and audit evidence management; familiarity with M365 and SharePoint-controlled environments is a plus.

  • Preferred: familiarity with EU dual-use controls or other non-U.S. export-control frameworks to support cross-jurisdiction coordination.

  • Preferred: experience supporting audits, investigations, voluntary disclosures, or regulator interactions.

Export Control Notice
This role involves regular access to information and items subject to U.S. export controls. To meet the export-control requirements of the position, applicants must qualify as a U.S. person as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.62.
