How much do ac dc design engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for ac dc design engineer in the United States is $88,150.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,000.00 and $98,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges an AC/DC Design Engineer faces when working on power supply projects?

AC/DC Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to meeting stringent efficiency and safety standards while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Balancing thermal management, electromagnetic interference (EMI) compliance, and compact design requirements can be complex, especially for high-power or space-constrained applications. Engineers also regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams such as PCB designers, firmware developers, and compliance specialists to ensure the final product meets regulatory and customer specifications.

What does an AC DC Design Engineer do?

An AC DC Design Engineer specializes in designing and developing power electronics systems that convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and vice versa. These engineers work on creating efficient power supplies, converters, and related circuitry for applications in consumer electronics, industrial equipment, and renewable energy systems. Their responsibilities include circuit design, simulation, prototyping, testing, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. They also troubleshoot and optimize existing systems to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency.

What is the difference between Ac Dc Design Engineer vs Power Supply Design Engineer?

AspectAc Dc Design EngineerPower Supply Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, R&D labs, industrial settingsElectronics manufacturing, R&D labs, industrial settings
Industry UsageDesigning AC/DC power supplies, converters, invertersDesigning power supplies, converters, and related components

Both roles involve designing power conversion systems, but Ac Dc Design Engineers focus specifically on AC/DC power supplies, while Power Supply Design Engineers may work on a broader range of power conversion products. The skills, credentials, and work environments are similar, making these roles closely related in the electronics industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AC DC Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AC DC Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and power electronics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, PCB design software, and industry standards such as IEC or UL, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable design of power systems that meet client and regulatory requirements.
