What does an abogado do?

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an abogado, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Abogado, you need a law degree, bar admission, and strong knowledge of legal principles and procedures. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management systems, and relevant legal software is often required. Exceptional analytical thinking, negotiation abilities, and effective communication set outstanding lawyers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for providing accurate legal advice, representing clients effectively, and navigating complex legal environments.

What are the most common challenges when working as an abogado in multidisciplinary teams?

Associate Attorney – Family Law Bourdon & Tortolero PLLC | Virginia | In Office

Bourdon & Tortolero PLLC is seeking a new or recently admitted attorney to join our growing family law practice. This position is ideal for someone who is awaiting Virginia Bar results, recently admitted to the Virginia Bar, or has approximately 0–2 years of legal experience.

We are looking for someone who wants to learn, grow, and build a long-term career in family law. Our firm has had great success bringing in new attorneys who are early in their careers, training them, and giving them meaningful opportunities to develop into confident, capable advocates for clients. Three of our newer attorneys have learned and grew with the firm, and we are looking to continue that success with the right candidate.

This is an in-office position. The attorney will work closely with experienced attorneys and staff on a variety of family law matters, including divorce, custody, support, protective orders, property division, settlement negotiations, mediation preparation, discovery, pleadings, and court appearances.

Responsibilities

The associate attorney will assist with and eventually handle matters involving:

  • Client case strategy;
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, settlement proposals, and correspondence;
  • Preparing for hearings, mediations, negotiations, and trial;
  • Communicating with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, and other professionals;
  • Conducting legal research and analysis;
  • Managing case deadlines and helping move matters forward efficiently;
  • Appearing in court as experience and readiness develop.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Admission to the Virginia Bar, or pending Virginia Bar results;
  • 0–2 years of legal experience;
  • A strong interest in family law;
  • Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Professionalism, good judgment, and attention to detail;
  • A willingness to learn, receive feedback, and take initiative;
  • The ability to work well in a team-oriented, in-office environment;
  • A desire to build practical courtroom, negotiation, and client-management skills.

Prior family law experience is helpful but not required. We are more interested in finding someone with the right attitude, work ethic, and long-term potential.

About the Firm

Bourdon & Tortolero PLLC is a family law firm focused on helping clients through some of the most difficult and important moments in their lives. Our work requires strong advocacy, practical problem-solving, careful preparation, and compassion for clients facing highly personal legal issues.

We offer a supportive environment for a new attorney who wants hands-on experience, mentorship, and real responsibility. The right candidate will not be expected to know everything on day one, but will be expected to work hard, learn quickly, communicate well, and take pride in doing excellent work.
