Job Description

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for participants in the Finance Internship Program at AbbVie.

Accounting & Finance Internship Program Overview:
As an AbbVie Accounting and Finance Intern, you will participate in a paid, 11-week summer program, working on meaningful assignments that have a real impact on our business and patients worldwide. Ideal candidates will combine technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving. The internship assignments are structured within four functional areas of the business:

  • Commercial: Commercial Finance provides global leadership, guidance, and financial support to AbbVie’s Commercial operations, including the Allergan Aesthetics business. This organization forecasts for our key brands in Immunology, Oncology, or Neuroscience and Eye Care. Commercial International Therapeutics helps to support our global operations and planning worldwide.

  • Operations: Operations Finance provides leadership and guidance to Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Purchasing and various other support functions related to financial planning and internal management reporting. The Finance team provides decision support services through analysis of key financial information, while driving operating margin improvement, maximizing tax advantaged product sourcing, and maintaining an assurance of supply.

  • Research & Development: Supports AbbVie’s Research & Development (R&D) activities with primary focus on pipeline compounds in development, beginning from target and molecule discovery to human clinical study conduct to filing for regulatory approvals in markets around the world, and support of on-market products for new indications and regulatory commitments. R&D Finance is generally aligned around the stages of compound development and its related operating functions.

  • Corporate:

    • Accounting: The Accounting COE governs AbbVie’s global accounting function, establishing and monitoring global policy, procedures, and controls for One AbbVie.

    • Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A): FP&A drives business performance by serving as trusted advisors and partners who influence strategy, enable operation excellence, and maintain a strong controls environment.

    • Finance Shared Services: Finance Shared Services governs and supports AbbVie’s global, standardized, end-to-end, back-office processes, maintaining the operations and transactional business activities that enable the company to run.

    • Internal Audit: Internal Audit protects and enhances organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight.

    • Tax and Global Trade Compliance (GTC): Tax is a trusted business partner that enables our business by fulfilling tax legal obligations and through collaboration with key finance and operational functions. By managing the domestic and international tax profile, Tax delivers value to the company and shareholders.

    • Treasury: Treasury provides centralized and efficient global business support in the areas of banking, foreign exchange, financial risk management, investments and capital structure that ensures adequate liquidity for the company and its subsidiaries. In addition to the HQ location in Lake County, Treasury has regional centers in Singapore, the Netherlands, and Colombia.

AbbVie offers you an opportunity to work within one of the many accounting and finance sub-function areas, including:

  • Financial Analysis

  • Budgets, Plans and Forecasts

  • Reporting & Controls

  • Manufacturing Operations Accounting

The majority of Accounting and Finance Interns will be placed in Lake County, IL, though there is a possibility of being placed within any U.S. AbbVie Placements will be based on business needs and our ability to accommodate individuals' preferences, when possible. Throughout the summer, interns will acquire valuable skills and be provided with professional development and networking opportunities that will leave a lasting impact. Interns are immersed in AbbVie culture, where we will create a sense of belonging through various social and philanthropy events, including participation in AbbVie’s Week of Possibilities. Interns are also encouraged to participate in our health and wellness program, AbbVie Vitality.

AbbVie strongly considers high-performing interns as candidates for the Accounting and Finance Development Program (AFDP). AbbVie’s AFDP consists of rotational experiences to prepare individuals for financial management roles. AFDP roles are crafted to help individuals develop exceptional functional and leadership traits by working on a wide range of projects, while providing exposure to different leaders in the company.

These accounting and finance experiences will develop you and put you on the fast track to future finance leadership opportunities at AbbVie. Similar to the internship, AbbVie AFDP rotations are structured within AbbVie’s four functional business areas.
