A Stringer In Journalism information
How much does a news stringer make?
What is the difference between A Stringer In Journalism vs Freelance Journalist?
| Aspect | A Stringer In Journalism | Freelance Journalist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically no formal credentials required, but experience helps | Often has journalism or related degrees, and a portfolio |
| Work Environment | Reports to news agencies or media outlets, often on a per-story basis | Works independently, managing own assignments and clients |
| Employer/Industry Usage | Used by news organizations to gather local or quick news | Used by various media outlets, including online, print, and broadcast |
A Stringer In Journalism usually works on a per-story basis for news agencies, often with minimal formal credentials, and reports from specific locations. Freelance Journalists also work independently but typically have formal education and manage multiple clients or outlets. Both roles involve independent work, but a Stringer is more often a local contributor for a news organization, while a Freelance Journalist may produce a broader range of content for various outlets.

Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Categories: Communications/Public Relations/Marketing, Education/Training/Instructional Design
Department:23040000 - CJC-JOURNALISM
Classification Title:
Lecturer/Visual Journalism
The Opportunity
The College of Journalism and Communications (CJC) at the University of Florida seeks to hire a Lecturer in Visual Journalism within the Journalism Department (nine- or 12-month, non-tenure track) to begin for the Fall 2026 term. This faculty appointment, renewable annually, has the opportunity for promotion to senior or master lecturer.
We are particularly interested in accomplished candidates who understand and have experience with various types of visual journalism - including, but not limited to, photography, multimedia video, design and/or overall visual storytelling. We are seeking an innovative professional and/or educator with the experience to teach the next generation of journalists to tell captivating visual stories with a focus on emerging digital and interactive storytelling techniques.
We invite applicants who have prior teaching experience (preferred), in addition to nationally acclaimed professional candidates with distinct expertise who possess the adaptability to integrate photo, video, multimedia, graphics, data visualization or other modern storytelling methods into their teaching.
Candidates should hold a minimum of a Bachelor's degree, ideally in journalism, media, communication or a related field. Candidates will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate classes, and we would especially welcome applicants with the ability to teach multiple skills-based courses in the program, including the ability to develop new courses.
The selected candidate will teach the equivalent of three courses per semester (plus an additional course in the summer for 12-month positions), in addition to potential supervisory work in the Innovation News Center. The candidate also will be expected to mentor and advise undergraduate students as assigned, manage student content creation, participate in scholarly and professional organizations and perform other duties as assigned. This is an in-person position based in Gainesville, Florida.

About University of Florida
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
