Summary
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Master Maintenance Technician Plumber in the Capital Management department. This department is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of city facilities, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency. The Master Maintenance Technician Plumber plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the city's infrastructure.
What you'll be doing:
  • Lead and coordinate daily work activities of assigned co-workers.
  • Install and repair piping systems for water, gas, and waste.
  • Inspect plumbing systems to identify issues and ensure safety compliance.
  • Fix leaks, clogs, and damaged fixtures. (sinks, toilets, water heaters, etc.)
  • Test systems for proper pressure, flow, and functionality.
  • Work with tools like pipe cutters, wrenches, augers, and inspection cameras.
  • Diagnose plumbing problems quickly and accurately.
  • Perform routine maintenance to prevent system failures.
  • Clear blockages in drains, sewer lines, and repair or replace worn-out components.
  • Perform complex technical work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City buildings, facilities, and/or parks.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards.
  • Conduct maintenance inspections to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs. Reading and understanding blueprints, schematics and technical drawings provide cost and labor estimates.
  • Perform general building maintenance and repair tasks, including flooring, ceiling tiles, fixtures, roofing, gutters, windows, concrete work, and sheetrock.
  • Ability and willingness to assist other trades as needed.
  • Operate and maintain various equipment, tools, and supplies necessary for completing essential functions.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, project managers, contractors, and the public to coordinate work activities and resolve issues.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
  • At least five (5) years of skilled plumbing experience including plumbing repair, maintenance, and drain cleaning, complemented by a background in building construction and facility maintenance..
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Valid licensure as a Plumber in the State of North Carolina.
  • Associate degree in Construction, Facilities Maintenance, or a related field.
  • Backflow certification is preferred; however, candidates must be willing and able to obtain it within the first year of employment.

Some positions may require a fingerprint-based SBI background check after a conditional offer and before your start date; HR will provide instructions if applicable.
